Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane believes his character was on show when making his Bucs debut in a six-goal thriller with former club Platinum Stars on Wednesday.
Mpontshane, who switched alliances in January, came on as a 46th minute substitute for the injured Brighton Mhlongo in a 3-3 draw with Dikwena at Orlando Stadium.
“It was a difficult match for me because they know me so well and I know them just as well too,” Mpontshane told Pirates' website of facing his ex-employers.
“It was not easy coming in as substitute especially for a fellow goalkeeper, but I knew I had to be strong. I had to keep it together for the good of the team and also not let my emotions get the better of me. I believe that if I lacked the strength of character yesterday, the topic would be the number of mistakes I made on the day. I’m thankful to my team for giving me the confidence to play well.”
The 28-year-old added: “To be honest I didn’t make any major adjustments or undergo a massive mental shift because there is always a possibility of playing when you are seated on the bench. As players we always try to be prepared, alert and ready for the coach to tell you to warm up because you are coming into the game. I am happy with my performance; I think I responded well to the situation and the only thing that upset me was the goal I conceded.”
