Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.

Bafana must shelve off-field problems

Bafana must shelve off-field problems tonight

Posted: 14 March 2010 Time: 10:26 am

Once again Bafana Bafana will have to put off-the-field complications out of their minds when a locally-based combination takes on Canada in a friendly international at King's Park tonight.

Last week the Premier Soccer League's scheduling of seven matches on Wednesday resulted in Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira having just one training session compared to five by the United States in Saturday's Nelson Mandela Challenge.

This week Orlando Pirates tried to withdraw midfielders Bennett Chenene and Teko Modise from the team to meet Canada.

Following the Bafana technical team's threat to go to Fifa to sanction Pirates, Chenene, whom the Buccaneers claim was injured in the weekend’s friendly Moqhaka Charity Cup tournament, was due to arrive last night. For Modise the SA camp’s response was simply not to release the playmaker, who took part in yesterday’s training session at King's Park.

“I don’t want to complain all the time but for a big game like that [against the USA] we had one training session with a full squad the day before the game and it is not advisable to push the players that much,” Parreira said yesterday of the disruptive build-up to Bafana's 1-0 defeat on Saturday.

“Chenene was supposed to report for duty 48 hours before the game [against Canada], so perhaps there was a misunderstanding with Pirates.”

While parties in South African football continue to pull in all directions rather than focusing on the common goal of building a competitive Bafana team for the 2010 World Cup, yesterday Parreira was looking ahead to tonight’s game.

“We know some players and their results," he said of the 51st-ranked Canadians. “They did very well in the last Concacaf Gold Cup where they won almost all their games and only lost 2-1 to [eventual winners] the USA.

“Of the squad of 17 players, 16 play in Europe, so it is not a naïve team - it is not a Canadian team but a Canadian-European team,” the coach added.

Canada, steadily improving on the world stage, include Tottenham Hotspur defender Paul Staltieri and Deportivo la Coruna midfielder Julian de Guzman in their ranks.

Parreira said he expects the North Americans to be similar in style to USA.

“They are physically strong and well built, so we have to use our strength which is pace, technique and skill. We cannot go for contact. If we put the ball on the ground I am absolutely certain we are going to have a good game.”

The SA coach, forced to use Ricardo Katza at left-back against USA after injuries to Bradley Carnell, Brett Evans and Tshepo Masilela, will wait on fitness tests to Masilela and left-wing Siphiwe Tshabalala before finalizing his starting line-up.

Masilela took part in yesterday's full training session, while Tshabalala pulled up with a muscle strain.

The Brazilian coach's shadow line-up had Rowen Fernandez at goalkeeper, and a defence of Bryce Moon, Benson Mhlongo, Bevan Fransman and Masilela. Lance Davids, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Modise and Tshabalala were in midfield behind Lerato Chabangu and Terror Fanteni up-front.

I think it is time South Africans focus on their National Team and SAFA must introduce laws to prevent such cases as the one on the Cosafa Castle cup.
You will be helding a world cup, so focus and pay attention on your pride. No Orlando Pirates nor Kaizer Chiefs will be noticed when Bafana Bafana Plays... so focuss on your National Team please, as a Mozambican i will be proud if South Africa achieve a higher lever...

I would like to ask SAFA and all South African Citizens...until when do we think our squard would be ready for World Cup...Is it June2010? This build...build...build will make the coach to relax too much...I think we should have set target as AFCON 2008...so that any loss after that is not appreciated...I am afraid with thi kind of attitude of building...this dream goal wont be accomplished...until certain goals are set into place.

If all players are fit, its going to be an interesting game. Canada will win it 2-0 but Bafana B will put up a good fight. Lerato Chabangu talent is wasted in the PSL. He hasn\'t grown as a footballer in the last 2 years. Still cannot cross and shoot straight. Prove me wrong tonite Lerato. The coach is on the right track by exposing Bafana B to such teams. We learn nothing from the Lesotho\'s, Zambia\'s of this world. Man of the match will be Davids. The boy is class.

Dit hulp nie!

Crying about Safa and yelling about boring soccer will not do anything to improve our soccer; rallying around our national team thou will go a long way into encouraging our players and helping them; yes build for 2010. Building by definition is a frastrating, tiring, boring and for the most part dirty activity... It is about time we understood and endured the building part so that we can enjoy the benefits; O, the one about English Soccer; now ladies and gentlemen, the English league did not start so rosey either, it took enduring during its building stage; so if you rather enjoy other peoples best rather build yours, by all means seat infront of DSTV and enjoy; if you would like to build this nation with us, I am sorry man you just have to endure Mangena and the rest of them with us; so let us work together and build this Bafana team, no matter what it takes, for a day let us shower them with positive words. Go Bafana and get them this evening, the country is behind you!

This Siyabonga chartacter seems to have a very low intellect, doesn\'t he/she? Dishing out threats to people who point out the truth?!?! Wow! What a dunce!

Let\'s start being constructive in our criticism; AND let\'s get real for a moment. What is our current FIFA Ranking? And that of the USA, whom we DOMINATED in the second half? And Canada who we play tonight?

Please allow the team the opportunity to grow into a bigger force on the continent. If these \"instant success cravers\" had their way, Phillemon Masinga would not have been allowed to become one of our deadlier marksmen in the National Jersey!
