Pirates hold off Aces

Orlando Pirates continued their fine recent form with a 2-1 defeat of Mpumalanga Black Aces at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday evening.
A goal in each half by Oupa Manyisa and Thabo Rakhale gave the Buccaneers the three points, with Tendai Ndoro’s penalty proving nothing more than a consolation.
It was the visitors who moved forward looking for an opening goal, but great goalkeeping by Brighton Mhlongo in the sixth minute denied Ndoro following a brilliant pass from Collins Mbesuma.
Pirates dominated after that, but it was a night to forget for Lehlohonolo Majoro, who missed three chances in the opening half which he would usually have no problem with.
But Bucs did get their first-half goal when Manyisa converted from the spot after Siboniso Gumede pulled down Thandani Ntshumayelo inside the box.
Despite the heavy rain the game continued to flow, though it took until the 73rd minute for Pirates to get another goal – and it was a beauty!
Substitute Rakhale picked the ball up 40 yards from goal, cut inside and curled the ball around Jackson Mabokgwane.
Aces pulled a goal back two minutes later when Thabo Matlaba fouled Aubrey Ngoma in the area, allowing Tendai Ndoro to score from the spot.
Aces should have equalized in the dying minutes when the ball fell to Eddie Ngalo from a goalmouth scramble, but the captain inexplicably blasted over the bar from just three yards out.
The win keeps Pirates in third position after Mamelodi Sundowns beat Chippa United at the same time, while Aces remain 13th with 26 points from 24 matches.
