Mpho Makola and Sifiso Myeni’s first-half goals were enough to hand Orlando Pirates three points as they beat Chippa United 2-0 on Tuesday night at Orlando Stadium.
Makola gave Bucs the lead from Myeni's cross from the right in the sixth minute. Myeni then beautifully finished Thandani Ntshumayelo's cross, first-time from the edge of the area, to make it 2-0 after 27 minutes.
The victory was Pirates' first against Chippa and it has seen the Buccaneers move to second spot in the Absa Premiership standings.
Despite coming to this match without Lehlohonolo Majoro, Pirates dominated from the first minute.
In the 21st minute Kermit Erasmus found himself inside the box but his shot went inches away from the far post. Pirates continued to attack and dominate the match as Chippa were put on the back foot.
As much as Chippa tried to get a goal before half time, things did not go their way as the match went to break with Pirates in the lead.
In the second half it was the visitors that looked more determined to score as they pressed Pirates hard.
Thabo Matlaba nearly came close to scoring for Pirates in the 52 minute, but his shot missed the target.
Zimbawean defender Eric Chipeta tried to test Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo with a shot from range, but it went over the crossbar.
Former AmaZulu goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela pulled off a few brilliant saves to deny Erasmus throughout the match when he could have had a hat-trick.
The arrival of Thabo Rakhale changed the pace of the game completely as Pirates pressed hard towards the Chippa box and if it was not for Mzimela many goals would have been scored.
The last effort for Pirates came in the 88th minute when Myeni tried to dribble past four Chippa defenders, but Okwuosa pulled off a good stop. Rakhale and Myeni pulled off a few tricks for the supporters as Bucs easily saw the game out.
