Phunya Sele Sele earned their first win of the season against Santos on Sunday afternoon.
Geofrey Sserunkuma was the hero for Celtic, netting in the 22nd minute to take the Bloemfontein team to five points after eight matches.
Celtic had numerous opportunities, and dominated the first half, but by the end of the game were hanging on frantically for the three points as Santos fought for a late equaliser.
It was Santos that had the first chance of the game, on four minutes, when a curling shot from Eleazar Rodgers forced a good save from Celtic keeper Patrick Tignyemb.
Just two minutes later Santos were on the attack again, this time a ball from Romano Scott sent Graham King through on goal. Tignyemb appeared to foul King with his hands, and was lucky to escape a sending off.
After that, however, Celtic began to dominate the game, and on 22 minutes Sserunkuma skilled Mogogi Gabanamong before chipping the advancing Santos keeper Francis Chansa.
For the rest of the first half the home side had the lion’s share of possession, but failed to make the most of it.
Sserunkuma tried a few more long-range efforts in the second half, before Dikete Mototo made a good run down the left and tried a shot in the 66th minute, but failed to force a save from Chansa.
Patrick Malokase has another good chance in the 71st minute, when he shot over the bar from 10 yards out.
Santos came back in the final stages of the game, but it wasn’t to be for the Cape side who sit on 13th place on the log.
