Gordon Igesund won't release Morne Nel for Amajita duty just yet

SuperSport United coach Gordon Igesund has assured the nation that he will release midfielder Morne Nel for national Under-20 duty, but can't afford to do it now.

Nel, who has been named in the Amajita squad for the CAF African Youth Championship next month, made a surprise appearance for United during the Nedbank Cup game against Polokwane City in Tshwane last night.

Amajita are currently in camp preparing for the trip to Senegal next week for the AYC tournament, where they have been pitted against Ghana, Mali and Zambia in Group B.

Group A is made up of hosts Senegal, Nigeria, Congo and Ivory Coast. The two top teams from each group will automatically qualify for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

Igesund says he will only be ready to release the Cape Town-born midfielder at least five days before start of the tournament, which kicks off on March 8.

"I don't want to commit myself but my plan with Nel is to release him at least five days before the actual start of the tournament. I have four or five players sitting on three yellow cards and of course Nel is improving all the time and is fighting his way into the team to establish himself, but we will certainly release him," Igesund says.

"[But] to go and train there for two weeks, I don't think any [PSL] team can do that," he adds.

"As you know, SuperSport United development is very strong at the moment. You look at every single junior national team, we have at least three players which shows that we have a very good development [academy].

"We want to make sure these guys go and play in international tournaments, that they go and play for the national team," says Igesund.

"I think it is important for Nel to go and play international football and play this kind of competition. He will improve as a player and we need to develop these players for Bafana Bafana."
