Mamelodi Sundowns forward Ejike Uzoenyi absence explained

Posted: 18 February 2015 Time: 11:07

Mamelodi Sundowns forward Ejike Uzoenyi is still a few weeks away from a return to action after suffering a hernia injury in December.

The Nigerian international signed for the Brazilians in January 2014 after an impressive CHAN tournament where he was voted the Most Valuable Player.

However, he only arrived at Chloorkop in August after representing his country at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

But Uzoenyi has failed to live up to expectations so far and has only made a handful of appearances for the club.

His last appearance for the club came in November 2014 as a substitute in the Telkom Knockout against Platinum Stars, while he was also not registered for the CAF Champions League.

“Ejike is still struggling with the hernia injury, but we expect him back in action in a week or two,” Sundowns communications director Thulani Thuswa tells KickOff.com.

“He has been out since December and the medical team is still busy with his rehabilitation. He didn’t participate in any of the friendly matches we played in January, and we don’t want to rush him back. So it’s safe to say he needs a few weeks to come back.”

Sundowns’ next match is against Thanda Royal Zulu in the Nedbank Cup on Saturday.
