South Africa Under-20 and Bidvest Wits goalkeeper Jethren Barr is set to miss the upcoming 2015 CAF Under-20 Youth Championships.
The 19-year-old shot-stopper was present earlier this year as Amajita won the 2015 Commonwealth Cup, beating Finland in the final, but was backup to first-choice keeper Dumisani Msibi.
Amajita selectors will now need to look elsewhere for their goalkeeping options as Barr announced his non-participation for the upcoming competition, with Msibi and Sibongiseni Mkhize of FC Cape Town the only remaining options.
Writing on his Facebook page, Barr confirmed that his recent injury troubles mean that he will be unable to travel to Senegal with Amajita for the prestigious youth tournament.
“Thank you to everybody who kept me in their prayers,” he began, “unfortunately, I’m out for four weeks and will miss Afcon U20.
“I appreciate all your prayers!”
The youngster was only registered as a PSL player with Bidvest Wits at the tail end of 2014 after signing a deal until the end of the current season, despite originally making his debut for the Clever Boys back in 2013.
South Africa are set to kick off their campaign against Ghana on March 9 in M’Bour.
