Kumalo back in Maritzburg United contention

Posted: 10 February 2015 Time: 13:08

Maritzburg United have been boosted by the availability of Sibusiso Kumalo ahead of tonight's Absa Premiership clash with Bidvest Wits at Harry Gwala Stadium (kick-off: 19h30).

The midfielder, who is on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, has recovered from a knee injury that required surgery in October.

Kumalo has played once this season, as a substitute in a 1-0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on September 27.

"Kumalo went for surgery before the break and he has fully recovered," says United spokesman Brian Zuma.

"All of the boys are fit," he adds.

Meanwhile, Zuma says head coach Steve Komphela has been focusing on improving the side's finishing during the PSL recess.

"We started the season well and then lost some consistency in the last five games.

"We created many chances but have not been taking them. This is what the coach has been focusing on."

Zuma also expressed confidence that Maritzburg will cope without influential defender Mohammed Awal, who was sold to Saudi outfit Al-Shabab FC last week.

"Obviously it's really up to the coach to decide [who will step in for Awal]. We have the likes of Kwanda [Mngonyama] at the back so that is why they didn't have a problem allowing Awal to leave.

"The team didn't always have Awal available and they also played well when he was not there."

Komphela's team are seventh on the table with 22 points from 17 games - nine points behind third-placed Wits.

The League resumes this evening after an elongated break to accommodate the Africa Cup of Nations.
