Orlando Pirates to make a move for Siyabonga Mpontshane

Posted: 29 January 2015 Time: 10:54

Orlando Pirates are said to be preparing an offer for Platinum Stars’ Siyabonga Mpontshane after missing out on their other goalkeeping targets.

The Buccaneers are still in the market for a new goalkeeper, with Senzo Meyiwa’s tragic passing late last year having left them with only two senior keepers in Brighton Mhlongo and Philani Zikalala.

Those two are the only registered goalies on Pirates’ CAF Confederations Cup squad list, with the club having missed out on the likes of Jackson Mabokgwane and Ronwen Williams.

Itumeleng Khune has also been mentioned as a possible replacement, but it now seems likely that he will sign a new contract at Kaizer Chiefs.

That leaves Mpontshane as the likely option. The 28-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and sources at Stars say he has already decided his future lies elsewhere.
