Henyekane strike hands Arrows win

Richard Henyekane continued his rich vein of form when he scored the only goal of the game to hand Golden Arrows a 1-0 win in their KwaZulu-Natal derby with Maritzburg United in an Absa Premiership clash at the Woodburn Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Manqoba Mngqithi's team will head into the league cup quarterfinals at the weekend full of confidence after moving into third place on the log standings with 12 points, just one behind co-leaders SuperSport United and BidVest Wits.

Arrows' Kagiso Senamela had the first genuine attempt at goal, firing over from 18 yards out in the third minute after Maritzburg goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap had punched away a corner kick.

Abafana Bes'thende saw further unsuccessful efforts from Henyekane and Kagisho Dikgacoi, while Sipho Mngomezulu and Collen Zimba went close for United.

But it was the in-form visitors who broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, Henyekane continuing his hot streak by firing home from within the penalty area after good set-up play by Dikgacoi.

The Team of Choice created enough scoring opportunities to get back on level terms, but poor shooting let them down, with Sam Ndlovu and Lynch Pule particularly guilty of missing good chances.

Arrows were dealt blow when midfielder Francis Kombe was forced to withdraw with injury in the 41st minute, being replaced by Thanduyise Khuboni, but the visitors would have been more than happy with their work in the first 45 minutes, heading into the break 1-0 up.

Maritzburg coach Gordon Igesund tried shuffling his pack in the second half, sending on Junior Khanye and Lebohang Kukame to try and add some spark in the midfield and forward line respectively – they each had an effort on goal with around 20 minutes to play, but neither could trouble Arrows goalie Helton Da Rocha.

In the end Arrows held out for their third win in the Absa Premiership this season, while it was a second successive loss for Maritzburg, following on from their 5-0 thrashing at the hands of defending champions SuperSport last week.
