The two Tunisian clubs who contest the first leg of the Confederations Cup final this weekend are regulars in African competitions.
Etoile Sahel which is one of the most titled teams on the continent and CS Sfaxien the defending champion portray a good record in Caf Cup competitions.
Etoile Sahel will be playing its sixth finals in eight attempts of the Caf Cup with three victories on their side.
The most popular club in the city of Sousse began competing in the Caf Cup in 1995 and went on to win its first final against AS Kaloum of Guinea (0-0 and 2-0).
The following year, the team reached the finals again but lost to Moroccan side Kawkeb Marrakech (3-1 and 0-2).
In 1999 Etoile Sportif of Sahel won its second Caf Cup to the detriment of Moroccan club Wydad A.C of Casablanca and in the year 2000, they were eliminated in the quarter final stage by Algeria`s JS Kabylie following post match penalties.
In 2001 the team played the finals and this time lost to JS Kabylie (2-1, 0-1on aggregate). In 2002 Etoile was eliminated in the quarter final stages by Cameroonian side Tonnerre Kalara Club of Yaoundé (2-1, 0-1 on aggregate).
In 2006 ESS won the cup against Forces Armées Royales (FAR) (1-1, 0-0 on aggregate).
Etoile Sahel has also played three finals of the Champions league winning a title in 2007 against Al Ahly of Egypt (0-0, 3-1 on aggregate), but also lost to Enyimba Football club of Nigeria in 2004 (2-1, 2-1) and against Al Ahly (0-0, 0-3 on aggregate) in 2005.
ESS are holders of two African Super Cup titles.
In 2008, ESS was drafted in the Caf Cup after being eliminated in the second round of the Champions league by Zimbabwe`s Dynamos of Harare (0-1, 0-1 on aggregate).
On the other hand C.S.Sfaxien has participated twice in the Caf Cup. The first participation dates back to 1998. The Tunisian club won the title (1-0, 3-0 on aggregate) against Senegal’s Jeanne d’arc.
The following year, in 1999 they were eliminated in the quarter finals by Etoile Sahel of Sousse (1-2 in Sfax and 3-3 in Sousse).
In 2007, they returned to winning ways defeating El Merrikh of Sudan (4-2, 1-0 on aggregate).
In 2005, C.S.S played the finals of Africa`s most prestigious club competition, the Champions League but lost the title to Al Ahly (1-1, 0-1 on aggregate).
Apart from their 1999 clash in the quarter finals of the Caf Cup, the two clubs met in the last edition of the Caf Super Cup which ended in Etoile winning the title.
