Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba has explained that the inclusion of Bernard Parker into his 23-man Afcon squad is down to more than just his international experience.
Parker, who has so far made 68 national team appearnaces, was named alongside strikers Tokelo Rantie, Bongani Ndulula and Sibusiso Vilakazi in the final squad set to travel to Equatorial Guinea for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in January next year.
The 29-year-old makes a return to the national team after a one-year absence, as he last featured for Bafana during the African Nations Championships in January 2014.
Mashaba has explained that the lack of strikers in the country is a real concern, and that Parker’s inclusion is not only from an “experience” point of view, but also to strengthen the strike force.
“It’s not only [his] experience… And it’s not only at the national team, it’s in the whole country, we are bankrupt in the striking force,” says Shakes.
“We brought [Parker] in to come and strengthen us, and to add numbers to our striking force,” he adds.
Parker is also South Africa's third highest goalscorers with 23 goals for Bafana Bafana to his name.
