Manyama breaks Chippa hearts

Posted: 21 December 2014 Time: 15:10

Chippa United will go into the holiday season with broken hearts after Lebogang Manyama’s brace secured maximum points for SuperSport United in their Absa Premiership clash in Port Elizabeth.

Manyama scored two volleyed goals on either side of the half time break to make sure of the points for Gordon Igesund’s side, after George Akpabio had opened the scoring for the home team.

The result leaves Chippa in eighth position while SuperSport end the year in 11th spot on the table.

There was a decent crowd in support of Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth for this final PSL match of the year 2014.

The home side almost went ahead as early as the fifth minute when Bafana Bafana forward David Zulu weaved his way past a cluster of players but lost his balance inside the 18 area just as he was about to get a sight on goal.

Then a chance fell to Manti Moholo who had made a run forward in the fifteenth minute only for his long range shot at goal to fly way over the crossbar.

But just two minutes later and Chippa dd take the lead when George Akpabio made certain from close range. David Zulu’s initial shot hit the post and rebounded into play, but Moholo did well to win the ball and quickly cross it back into the danger zone, and Akpabio was left unmarked and just had to volley his shot past the inexperienced Dumisani Msibe in goal.

Just before the half hour mark, Msibe dropped a routine catch and almost gifted Zulu with a clear shot on goal, but the striker could not take advantage of the half chance.

SuperSport came back strong inside the final ten minutes of the first half and it paid off in the 39th minute when Lebogang Manyama found the equalizer with a powerful volley at the back post. Chippa defender Eric Chipeta, however, should have done better with his weak attempt of a headed clearance.

One all at half time and a fair reflection of the game thus far.

Early in the second half, Dino Ndlovu got in behind the Chippa defence but could not keep his shot down and on target and on the other end, Akpabio just could not get enough power on his shot from an inviting position.

Just after the hour mark, Msibi tipped away a curling Manti Moholo shot that was heading into the top corner following a clever attacking move by Chippa.

Then Thuso Phala came close after 73 minutes with a powerful header before he provided what proved to be the winning goal.

Phala skipped past his man on the left flank and whipped in an inviting cross to the far past where Manyama did brilliantly to steady himself before volleying first time past a cluster of players and goalkeeper Mzimela. It was a tight angle and a truly world class goal.
