Orlando Pirates Bloemfontein Celtic PSL report

Posted: 20 December 2014 Time: 19:28

A first half goal by Lehlohonolo Majoro and a deflected second-half strike by Kermit Erasmus gave Orlando Pirates all three points against Bloemfontein Celtic at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.

The 2-1 victory takes the Buccaneers to fourth place with 26 points, while Clinton Larsen’s men – for who Lerato Lamola scored – are 10th with 20 points.

Siwelele started like a house on fire and could have been two up after 10 minutes. First Hellings Mhango was played in on goal but, just before he was about to pull the trigger, Mpho Makola took the ball off his foot.

Soon after Mukuka Mulenga cut through Bucs’ defence, but Brighton Mhlongo pulled off a fine save as he tipped the ball around the post for a corner.

Against the run of play, Pirates got the opener on 13 minutes when a beautiful through-ball allowed Majoro to race through on goal and execute an exquisite chip which gave Patrick Tignyemb no chance.

Erasmus almost added a second straight away, but this time the goalkeeper was up to the task and pulled off a good save.

Celtic continued to press for an equaliser, and it came in the 44th minute following a lightning quick counter-attack to which Lamola put the finishing touches.

Pirates came out desperate to restore their lead, and the goal did eventually come on 67 minutes. Erasmus connected with Patrick Phungwayo’s cross from the left, but his shot was going wide, only for Bevan Fransman to deflect the ball into his own net.

A few minutes later Erasmus nearly caught Tignyemb napping with a curler, but it deflected narrowly wide for a corner.

Thabo Rakhale’s introduction provided more headaches for the Celtic defence, but ultimately the two goals were enough for the Buccaneers to end a very tough year on a positive note.

hate him or love him, Mr Ballz hardly misses as a first man of attack.... face to face with a goalie his composure is second to none in the PSL, reminiscent of the once hot Katlego Mphela

I want to understand that because apparently Erasmus' goal was heading wide and was deflected into goals by Fransman, is it not own goal by the latter?

Please enlighten me as I did not watch the game but relied on kO's reporting.
