Premier Soccer League Maritzburg United Mamelodi Sundowns

Posted: 16 December 2014 Time: 17:59

Anthony Laffor struck twice as Mamelodi Sundowns beat Maritzburg United 2-1 to extend their unbeaten run in the Absa Premiership to 12 games on Tuesday night.

Laffor, who is on the radar of log leaders Kaizer Chiefs, netted his first League goals of the season after the break, with ex-Downs midfielder Kurt Lentjies pulling one back late on at Harry Gwala Stadium.

Victory lifted the champions a point above Bidvest Wits to second on the table with 28 points from 16 games - 15 points adrift of Chiefs, while United remain sixth with 22 points.

The early exchanges belonged to the visitors with Khama Billiat squandering a golden opportunity to add to his goal tally in the fifth minute.

Billiat snuck in behind the Maritzburg defensive line, but was unable to test Virgil Vries from an acute angle having done well to create space for himself inside the penalty area.

Maritzburg found their rhythm as the half grew on with Mohau Mokate forcing Kennedy Mweene into a smart save in the 38th minute. The Team of Choice striker directed a powerful effort at goal from range, Mweene though was up to the task.

Chances were limited in what was a tightly contested first-half with either side failing in their attempts to trouble the scorers before the interval.

The Brazilians were handed a gift five minutes into the second-half as a resurgent Laffor pounced to open the scoring. A dreadful defensive mistake let in the Liberian who rounded Vries before poking the ball into an empty net, 1-0.

Laffor doubled his tally in the 63rd minute. Man of the Match Teko Modise ignited a quick attacking move which was rounded-off with aplomb by the former SuperSport United attacker who built on his sterling performance off the bench against AmaTuks on the weekend.

Substitute Lentjies pulled one back for Steve Komphela’s side in the 85th minute. The midfielder firing in via the inside of the post from the edge of the area.

The Team of Choice piled forward in what was a full seven minutes of stoppage time, but Downs held on to secure a valuable win.

What Chimps are doing is not right, it makes our league look like Bundesliga...where Bayern just opens a 18 point gap. Its really boring, our wins are meaningless, Cowtha's shining, no celebration for us, Begster must field youngadult Buki, and all tedpoles in the zoo

I have just seen the other side of Pitso, when he was being interviewed. Umjita lo. He is just under so much pressure. I actually feel sorry for him. Eventhough SiyaDunusa won this game, it was clear that they are no longer the same Sundowns who won the league last season. #Race For Number 2.

we lack that killer punch, contrary to chief,we battle to defend the lead even against small teams.Lets keep on winning and drawing and see what will happen at the end,but what gives me hope is the fact that chiefs wins are not that convincing
