Santos back on winning trail

Santos returned to winning ways in the Absa Premiership when they beat Free State Stars 2-0 at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.

Goal opportunities were at a premium early on as neither side managed to make inroads into the opposition box.

The only noteworthy action early on came via Erwin Isaacs, whose fiercely-struck shot brought out the best from Stars keeper Walter Khumalo, who tipped the ball over the bar.

Ea Lla Koto had to wait until the half hour mark before they had a real chance on goal when Prince Olumu's shot from a central position just outside the area flew just wide of Wayne Roberts' upright.

The second half was far more entertaining for the small home crowd – just a couple of minutes after the restart Graham King blasted a shot across the face of goal for the home team before Stars' Diyo Sibisi unleashed a long range screamer which flew just over the goal.

Santos should have gone ahead in the 58th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Olomu had handled Wayne Arendse's header on the line.

But while Olumu went off for an early shower, Khumalo made a fine stop to deny Tyren Arendse scoring from the spot.

Four minutes later there was nothing the keeper could do to prevent Bevan Fransch from scoring with a cracking drive from long range.

The hosts doubled their lead with 10 minutes to go when a brilliant team movement involving Isaacs and King saw the latter square the ball for Eleazar Rodgers, who showed good composure to slot the ball home.

The only negative point for the Cape side was the sending off of Tawonga Chimodzi in injury time.
