Phumelele Bhengu striking lucky at Thanda Royal Zulu

Posted: 8 December 2014 Time: 12:56

NFD top scorer Phumelele Bhengu is enjoying somewhat of a career revival at Thanda Royal Zulu and currently tops the scoring charts with nine goals.

Bhengu announced his arrival while playing for Moroka Swallows in the 2008/09 season when he scored a brace against Kaizer Chiefs, a feat that raised expectations. However, since then he has not reach the heights expected after once being touted as the 'next Benni McCarthy'.

The versatile player helped the national Under-20 team reach the quarter-finals of the 2009 World Youth Championships playing as a right-back for Serame Letsoaka's side.

Bhengu finished the 2010/11 season as the second-top scorer in the First Division while playing for Mpumalanga Black Aces, but at the start of the 2011/12 season he found himself without a club.

Stints being clubless and at the now-defunct Bay United were followed in January 2013 by the signing of a two-and-a-half-year deal at Chippa United, who offloaded him just two weeks later citing a lack of match fitness.

Almost two years later, the 25-year-old is proving that not only is he match-fit, but he certainly still knows where the goal is after being played regularly as a striker at Amabhubesi.

Thanda are third on the NFD log, just three points behind leaders Milano after 14 games played.

This is the unluckiest player I have ever seen. Part of the problem is coaches used him incorrectly. To me he was/is a classic number, playing with his back to goal bringing in midfielders into play, but he was used incorrectly, instructed to run at defenders which has never been his strength. Nobody managed to see the talent in him and harnessed it.

i still recon when he scored two beautiful goals against kaizer chiefs, i believe is Serame Letsoaka who killed he's progress by playing him as a right back although he did well for under 20 what about he's future i believe he's right position is a centre forward
