Nelson Mandela Challenge South Africa Bafana Bafana Ivory Coast

Posted: 30 November 2014 Time: 17:00

Bongani Zungu and David Zulu scored either side of the break as Bafana Bafana deservedly beat Ivory Coast 2-0 in the annual Nelson Mandela Challenge at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday.

Santos striker Fagrie Lakay notably became the youngest ever Bafana international in the friendly at 17 years and 183 days old, bettering the mark set by Ajax Cape Town defender Rivaldo Coetzee last month.

Both countries - who used the game as part of their preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations - fielded experimental sides as the fixture fell outside the Fifa calendar, meaning clubs were not obliged to release their players for it.

Bafana, under the stand-in captaincy of Thamsanqa Sangweni, dominated from the onset, and had a second minute goal controversially ruled out for offside. Moroka Swallows attacker Vuyisile Wana slid home a cross by Themba Zwane, but the latter was adjudged to be in an offside position when freed down the left flank by Man of the Match Zungu.

The hosts continued to press, as Wana and Zulu had wayward attempts on goal before Zungu broke the deadlock in the 31st minute with a composed finish at the back post after being teed up by the impressive Patrick Phungwayo in the box.

Zwane nearly added a second just before the interval but he was bravely foiled in a one-on-one situation by the onrushing Abdul Cisse.

However, Shakes Mashaba's men doubled the advantage in the 53rd minute, as Chippa United forward Zulu tapped into an empty net from just outside the area after the keeper came out to deny debutant Siyanda Ngubo a shot on goal.

Bafana pushed in search of a third, as substitute Lerato Lamola, who replaced Zulu, tested the opposing keeper with a low shot in the 67th minute.

At the other end, the solid-looking Jackson Mabokgwane made a crucial stop in the latter stages after the Bafana defence was exposed.

Mashaba made a raft of changes in the second period, bringing on Lakay, Lamola, Dumisani Msibi, Asavela Mbekile and Ntsikelelo Nyauza.

South Africa: Mabokgwane (Msibi 83'), Nhlapho, Phungwayo, Komane, Mngonyama, Sangweni (Mbekile 84'), Zungu, Zwane (Lakay 76'), Wana (Nyauza 87'), Tlolane (Ngubo 46'), D Zulu (Lamola 63').

Ivory Coast: Cisse, Yannick, Doumbia, Diabate, Magbi, Moukoro, Diomande, Britto, Victorien, Zirignon, Chester.

Well done to Shakes and the boys! Shakes is really building a good story to the with this Bafana team! Well done again.

David Zulu is a good striker,Bobby did a good thing by getting him for Chiefs! My biggest worry is:" will Baxter ever play him over is son Nkhatha?"

I think as Chiefs' supporters,if this thing(Nkhatha) starts the game on wenesday,we should do something serious like maybe throwing him with vuvuzelas once he entered the pitch!

That guy is the worst player to have ever wore a Chiefs Jersey!

Shakes is exposing da SA coaches some if not most of da players who played today their fringe players in thier different teams bt Shakes played them cuz he believes in them nd they out perform themselves. Zungu is playing second fiddle to Modise nd Kekana @ Signclowns, same as zwane, Ngubo is 200% better than Bacela nd all his cronies combine, Lets hope Baxter saw wat we saw on Zulu cuz that thing called Nkatha nd Mthembu they're just useless

Every time before the game, I want nkatha to be kidnapped...I am tired of this guy...tough n hardworking doesn't make you a good player. ..you must have vision and the brain of football. ..Some strikes can learn something from nkatha in terms of the off ball movement. ..being in good spaces...that hunger its that for nkatha eish poor finishing does let him down

Kingson Nkhatha doesn't have to score, he gives the defenders a hard time, look at the game against Sundowns, he kept Scut and Ntethe at the back. We all know that Scut likes to overlap and has scored goals before. I think KC fans don't understand Nkhatha

Guys can we stop with calling Zulu a Chiefs player, nna I don't trust this media. We are going to be left an egg in our face like rodents faithfools about the Kalaba debacle. They all over running naked yaping to anyone who care to listen that what the toothless want the toothless gets.

Understand him alone then....I arrest my case with that guy...from now on even when he scores I won't celebrate his goal...just want him in the stands

MlulekiSimelane the chances that nkhatha misses are created by other kc players, nkhatha does not run alone in the field,he is a striker he must score goals
