Telkom Knockout Final: SuperSport United Platinum Stars

Posted: 29 November 2014 Time: 14:46

Thuso Phala scored an extra-time winner as SuperSport United were crowned 2014 Telkom Knockout champions after a 3-2 victory over Platinum Stars at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

Phala's 111th-minute strike separated the sides after 120 minutes of football that included two penalties scored and one saved. Daniels scored the two spot-kicks and Eleazar Rodgers missed one, while the other goals were scored by Robert Ng'ambi and Mogokolodi Ngele.

Dikwena took the lead in the 28th minute after substitute Ngele teed up Robert Ng'ambi to fire home from just inside the area. Ngele had come on just a minute earlier in place of the injured Letladi Madubanya.

But SuperSport were back level on 36 minutes when David Mathebula was sandwiched in the box by Luvolwethu Mpeta and Tshepo Gumede. Clayton Daniels fired the spot-kick straight down the middle to get his side back in the game.

It was just reward for Matsatsantsa after they they had a strong penalty shout denied on 21 minutes when Gumede clattered into Lebogang Manyama after he was played through by Dove Wome.

It was a half in which SuperSport bossed more of the ball and made most of the play, with a couple of nervy moments for both goalkeepers.

Five minutes in Mpontshane had his first nervy moment when he dropped Thuso Phala's drilled cross from the right, but fortunately for the keeper Enocent Mkhabela fired over the bar after Wome teed him up.

Wome then forced the first save out of Mpontshane after he showed quick feet to beat a defender before firing a stinging drive that the goalie had to stretch to knock over for a corner.

From the resultant corner Mpontshane was indecisive at his near post and needed Eleazar Rodgers to clear off the line to save his blushes.

Four minutes later Rodgers charged down a Ronwen Williams clearance and the ball fell to Ng'ambi, but he was unable to chip the out-of-position goalkeeper, who managed to get back to make a scrambling save.

Then Letladi Madubanya had to leave the field with a hamstring injury after 27 minutes, but his replacement Ngele sparked the match into life as he set up the opening goal for Ng'ambi before Daniels' penalty restored parity.

The second half became a cautious affair as both sides took their foot off the pedal, preferring to preserve what they had rather than risk losing it all.

The best chance for Stars fell to Thabiso Semenya as he met Ndumiso Mabena's corner-kick at the far post, unchallenged, but he could not keep it down.

SuperSport's best chance fell at the feet of Telkom Knockout top scorer Dove Wome in a great position following a Phala cross and Mathebula flick-on, but the Togo international could not get sufficient power behind his shot to beat Mponshane.

To extra time it went, and the game was suddenly injected with a dose of drama on 102 minutes as Solomon Mathe pulled down Phala in the area and Daniels – who was lucky to still be on the pitch after escaping a second yellow card for a cynical foul on Ngele earlier – sent his spot-kick into the right-hand corner to put United ahead.

But just a minute later Ngele latched onto a Rodgers lay-off and fired a superb volley into the bottom-right corner, giving Williams no chance as he levelled the scores at 2-2.

Stars were given the chance to go 3-2 up right at the end of the first half of extra time when Mahlatsi Makububela's cross hit Thabo Moloi's arm. Rodgers stepped up but Williams dived to his left to keep out the penalty and then showed brilliant reflexes to save Rodgers' rebound effort with his legs. 2-2 it remained…

And then came a moment of magic from Phala, who cut in from the right onto his left foot, beating two defenders before curling a shot with the outside of his right foot into the far corner.

SuperSport held on to be crowned 2014 Telkom Knockout champions and hand coach Gordon Igesund his first cup trophy since his 2000 BP Top 8 win with Orlando Pirates.
