Mashaba doubtful for Mandela Challenge against Ivory Coast Mamelodi Sundowns release all Bafana players to Shakes Mashaba

Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed they will release their national team players for the Nelson Mandela Challenge, but Mzikayise Mashaba could miss out through injury.

Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba yesterday named his squad to face Cote d'Ivoire in the annual showpiece at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday, a day after the Telkom Knockout Final between SuperSport United and Platinum Stars.

As the international tie falls outside of the FIFA calendar, clubs are not obliged to release their players for it.

SuperSport and Stars were not asked to avail any of their players owing to their cup commitments.

The Brazilians, however, say they had no hesitation in freeing up their assets for the national cause.

“Sundowns have always supported Bafana Bafana by availing the called up players even when the fixture falls outside of the FIFA calendar and the club will continue doing so,” read a club statement.

“We will release all the the players called up by coach Shakes Mashaba because it’s part of our culture and is imprinted in our vision and mission statement to support any national team cause.”

Downs' Themba Zwane, Bongani Zungu, Asavela Mbekile and Mashaba were called up by Shakes. [Mzikayise] Mashaba, though, is being assessed by his club's doctors after limping out of training on Tuesday morning.

I'm not a medical doctor but I think your comment is petty and narrow, Abou Diaby has been with arsenal for many years and only played a handful of games due to injury. Its common sense that there is no medicine to prevent sport injury
