Thulani Serero and Tokelo Rantie score as Bafana beat Sudan

Posted: 15 November 2014 Time: 17:34

Bafana Bafana have booked their place in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations following a 2-1 victory over Sudan at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Goals from Thulani Serero and Tokelo Rantie saw the South Africans win and, most importantly, qualify for the tournament to be hosted by Equatorial Guinea.

For the better part of the first half Bafana were casual in their approach, but as soon as they got going it was difficult to stop them in their tracks.

As expected, they started on good footing and as early as the fourth minute Rantie made a burst at goal, beating one defender, but he was crowded afterwards.

In the eighth minute Bafana got the first corner of the match and Oupa Manyisa took it but it was cleared. However, the ball fell kindly to Thulani Serero who picked it up just outside the box and tried his luck from distance, but dragged it wide of the right-hand upright.

As much as Sudan were sitting back and absorbing the pressure there were moments when they made forays forward and, in the 16th minute, Darren Keet was forced into making his first save, clutching onto a long-range effort from Omer Mahmoud.

The team’s captain on the day Dean Furman then gave the ball away in the 23rd minute and Sudan looked to capatilise, but Andile Jali tracked back brilliantly to cut out the danger.

On the half-hour mark, Sudan broke straight through the middle and were one-on-one, but Sibusiso Khumalo tracked back with a brilliant tackle to deny the striker.

After those worrying moments for the approximately 32 000 Bafana fans in the stadium, Serero eased those worries when he got his first goal for the country in the 38th minute, tucking home Rantie's cross.

Bongani Ndulula could have got another one for Bafana on the stroke of halftime following a great run from Khumalo, whose cross took out a defender and the keeper, but ‘Drogba’ missed an open goal.

Straight after the break Rantie had a great chance to put the game beyond doubt when he chased down what looked like another lost cause. However, the ball bounced kindly for him, but the goalkeeper pulled off a good save to deny the shot.

Manyisa had a ‘goal’ chalked off for offside straight after, but Bafana were not to be denied any further as they finally got the second through Rantie on 53 minutes

Serero played in Rantie, who swerved past one defender before opening up his body and curling into the top corner.

Again, Bafana started to look a bit casual in their approach as Sudan tried to get back into the match – and they did in the 76th minute when Salah Ibrahim pulled one back as the defence fell asleep at the back to concede their first goal in five matches of the qualifiers.

That set up a tense finish as first Sudan had the ball in the back of the net with a minute to go, but it was ruled offside, and then Ibrahim went down in the area under pressure from Khumalo, but the ref waved play on.

Bafana held on to win 2-1, and qualified for a major international tournament for the first time since 2008.

Let me also reiterate… Shame on Morocco…

Think Rantie is not a team player.......

He only passes other players when he does not have any options.......

He is fast and when he has to lay a pass to other players, he wants to dribble past evr-one....

He will cost us one day.......coach needs to sit him down.......

Counted 5 or more passes he cud have laid for simple tap ins......

Am sure we all have noticed that. But there are also positives that he brings to the team.If he can improve on his decision-making and final ball,he will be fine

There is still lots of room for improvement on our game, but we are on the right track.

Our lack of killer instinct also worries me a lot, so too is Shakes also judging by his post-match analysis. But am confident he will sort it out

That's a decision for Shakes to make, not you.so sit your butt down

Wena sepantu u have a serious problem with shakes, can you just tell us one thing that made you to hate him like this? N I don't think u can say is because of winning with young boys than failing with those experienced one that u thought they'll be featured. No sepantu U've been negative as if chiefs lost yesterday against BB n over above you don't even congratulate someone who made it a point that we qualify on our own not by any luck like before. Get sober n apologize to shakes n wait for psl to resume n comment again.

One thing for sure : your age is over than 22 so you must know how to chose from negativity n positivity. Change this profile name of yours big fellow as it makes lot of us who knows nyoana(vagina) to think that you're mad n you'll comment irresponsible. Hai butle sepantu

Yes and never forget the famous back pass even in Ethiopia they know him Mr Mbalula can testify for me in that one applying the phrase"bunch of losers"the crystal palace technical team in english third division can tell you that the one legged player is a traditional cow which they can't even think of signing "it" as for Klate is justifiable sometimes coz he once scored against 0chiefs using his right foot.

Lol Khosi I didn't drag any specific players name here if I am not mistaken and I wonder why you have chosen Shabba out of all of the former Bafana players anyway we're not in a fight after all

Congradulations boys for winning and making sure we qualify. Tokelo rantie again you proved me right, at first you played like you are alone in the field and missed sitters, but luckily you redeemed yourself by playing first time cross which serero put in the back of the net od wich anyone could have done and I was so suprised to see you doing that. You scored a very nice goal. And I wish you could start playing like a team member then we will have a good team, you played better yesterday that's why you finished the game. Ndulula hardluck sonny, those things happen in football and I believe you will bounce back.

Welldone boys and shakes.
