Thabiso ‘Boyzzz’ Khumalo’s dreams of CONCACAF Champions League glory with DC United came to an end last night after the MLS side were knocked out of the competition by Mexico’s Cruz Azul.
United played with 10 men for more than an hour after James Thorpe was sent off for two bookable offences, leaving Khumalo isolated as a lone attacker.
Nicolas Vigneri and Pablo Zeballos scored for the home side, who top the group with 10 points from Marathon of Honduras and Saprissa of Costa Rica (both seven), followed by United (one).
But despite the disappointment, the forward, who turns 28 on Monday, has been one of the stand-out performers for DC United this season having started each of the last six matches in the MLS.
He is only on loan from Second Division Pittsburgh Riverhounds, but reports in the United States suggest coach Tom Soehn will look to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.
