Telkom Knockout quarter-final Kaizer Chiefs Platinum Stars

Posted: 26 October 2014 Time: 14:09

Holders Platinum Stars advanced to the Telkom Knockout semi-finals by edging Kaizer Chiefs 5-3 on penalties following a goalless 120 minutes of football at FNB Stadium on Sunday.

Chiefs dominated the contest but paid the price for poor finishing, as Luvolwethu Mpeta slotted the winning kick after substitute George Lebese was denied in the shootout by the impressive Siyabonga Mpontshane.

Dikwena will host Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the last-four, while Orlando Pirates will entertain SuperSport United.

Stuart Baxter's men started the tie strongly, and had a great chance to score in the 12th minute, but striker Kingston Nkhatha rattled the side-netting from close range after being played through by Mandla Masango. A minute earlier Stars' Thabiso Semenya drilled a long-range effort straight at the perfectly placed Brilliant Khuzwayo, who made no mistake.

Nkhatha threatened again on 30 minutes, as he flashed a shot across the face of goal from a tight angle in the box.

At the other end, Dikwena forward Ndumiso Mabena drew a smart save from Khuzwayo with a curling free-kick in the 39th minute.

Amakhosi then had two opportunities just before the interval, but Bernard Parker's first-time strike was straight at the alert Mpontshane, as was Nkhatha's brave diving header.

Nkhatha nearly caught out Mpontshane 10 minutes after the recess, but the keeper did well to backtrack and tip over a lofted effort from the industrious Zimbabwean.

Mpontshane made two further fine stops around the hour-mark, as he acrobatially gathered a reaction strike from Masango before dropping down smartly to foil a shot from Parker.

The Glamour Boys continued to press, as Man of the Match Siboniso Gaxa powered a free header over from a Parker delivery in the 72nd minute, with Nkhatha doing the same a minute later off a right-wing cross by 'Pa'.

Parker nearly decided affairs in stoppage time, but he glanced a Masango corner just wide of the target.

The first half of extra time saw Eleazar Rodgers balloon a wayward shot for Dikwena, while the opposing Siphiwe Tshabalala looped a header harmlessly over before substitute Siphelele Mthembu scuffed a deft flick-on in the area by 'Shabba'.

Tefu Mashamaite headed the ball home in the 106th minute, but the stand-in Chiefs skipper's effort was correctly disallowed for offside.

Shabba tried his luck in the 116th minute but his low shot on the angle could find no way past Mpontshane at the near post.

Allan Freese's charges went on to win the shoot-out, with Lebese the only man to miss from the spot. Stars scored via their captain Vuyo Mere, Rodgers, Mogakolodi Ngele, Tshepo Gumede and Mpeta, while Tshabalala, Masango and Kgotso Moleko were also successful with their attempts.

Most fans spend their time analysing their opponents and end up turning a blind eye in observing their strengths and weaknesses.

While we top the League, as you have rightfully reminded others, we indeed need to strengthen our squad.

If winning a cup & not loosing a single game all season is average & weak, I'd rather my Chiefs stay average & weak!
