Telkom Knockout: Sundowns vs AmaZulu

Posted: 25 October 2014 Time: 18:18

Mamelodi Sundowns needed extra-time to get past AmaZulu in their Telkom Knockout quarter-final clash at Loftus Stadium on Saturday evening.

Cuthbert Malajila opened the scoring in the 15th minute, burying a header from Khama Billiat's cross following a short corner from Surprise Moriri.

The Brazilians controlled the majority of possession in a rather slow-tempo cup clash in Pretoria, with AmaZulu not looking very threatening going forward.

Moriri had the clearest opening after the goal, receiving the ball from the lively Billiat inside the area before dragging it back onto his right foot and firing a tame shot at Aubrey Mathibe.

Pitso Mosimane's side went into the tunnel at half-time in control after a half of not much action and very few chances.

There was some bad news for Sundowns in the second half as Billiat, who had just returned from a lengthy injury absence, went off injured again and was replaced by Ejike Uzoenyi.

Uzoenyi nearly made an immediate impact after Moriri cleverly teed him up on the edge of the box, but his left-footed curler went just wide of the left upright.

Hlompho Kekana had the next best chance, thundering an effort just over the crossbar in the type of shot we have come to expect from the long-range specialist.

Usuthu kept the ball better in patches but ultimately had nowhere near enough to trouble the Sundowns defence in a disappointing performance.

But Sundowns were punished for not putting the game to bed as substitute Bongani Ndulula pounced on a long-ball out of nowhere to stab home an equaliser with virtually the last kick of the game.

To extra-time it went.

After a first half of extra-time with a couple of half-chances, Kekana took the next chance he had to secure the result for Pitso Mosimane's side.

After some neat interplay, two clever touches in the penalty area from Malajila and Themba Zwane laid the ball into the path of Kekana on the edge of the area. The midfielder made no mistake, thumping the ball into the bottom-left corner to give Mathibe no chance.

Masandawana were singing again towards the second full-time whistle as the rain started pouring down as Loftus, but this time Sundowns held on to progress to the Telkom Knockout semi-finals.

Pitso will never ever ask for help from you on soccer issues, the only thing you can do is to hate as you have control over it.

Nobody is forcing you to support Sundowns if you can choose any other club that will do as you want.

We need to clean our soccer of hooligans.

Let me rather suggest something to you, anger kills I know you are still hurting from the loss sleep over my comment then tomorrow morning read it again you will understand it much better when the anger and disappointment has subsided.

This will also teach you and your fellow Khosi fans to make less noise about Sundowns and concentrate on your team.

Also learn to use the reply button since you have more ngqondo that I do so to know which post you are responding to.

Dankie Khosi for understanding.
