African Women's Championship semi-final Banyana go down to Nigeria

Posted: 22 October 2014 Time: 17:49

Banyana Banyana lost 2-1 to Nigeria in their African Women's Championship semi-final at Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek on Wednesday.

Woman of the Match Asisat Oshoala struck a brace for the dominant Super Falcons, with Refiloe Jane pulling one back after the break for Banyana.

The top three finishers at the competition will qualify for the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada.

Oshoala opened the scoring in the 38th minute, as her shot in the box deflected off Banyana captain Janine van Wyk and past the helpless Thokozile Mndaweni, who made a number of fine saves beforehand.

Oshoala doubled the advantage with an ambitious chip on the stroke of half-time.

Banyana threatened on occasion, as Portia Modise thundered a strike narrowly wide midway through the first stanza, while Van Wyk drew an unconvincing save from Ibubeleye Whyte with a dipping effort shortly before the recess.

Banyana reduced the deficit in the 68th minute, as Jane's shot on the angle was controversially adjudged to have crossed the line.

Vera Pauw's charges, however, were unable to draw level come the end of 90 minutes.

Nigeria: Ibubeleye Whyte, Ugo Njoku, Ebere Ngozi, Onome Ebi, Josephine Chukwunonye, Evelyn Nwabuoku, Halimatu Ayinde, Ngozi Okobi, Francisca Ordega, Asisat Oshoala, Desire Oparanozie.

South Africa: Thokozile Mndaweni , Simphiwe Dludlu, Nothando Vilakazi, Janine Van Wyk, Noko Matlou, Amanda Dlamini, Mpumi Nyandeni, Refiloe Jane, Leandra Smeda, Portia Modise, Shiwe Nogwanya.

TikaTeka Bad-mouthed, sore loosers South Africans. How many of your girls on that pitch are beauty queens or can compare by looks to Asisat Ohoala, Francesca Ordega and Oparanozie who still look pretty despite being female footballers? U shuld undastand why a Nigerian is d first and only black African winner of d Miss World Pageant (Agbani Darego, 2001).

A Nigerian is always competitive and enterprising and that's why SA's actually hate (even tho they wont admit it and try to camouflage it with their disrespectful slurs and misplaced arrogance against even other Africans). The men (when we get the full complement of our best players - IK Uche, Martins, Iheanacho, Osaze etc -, just like the women here) will humble that ur loud-mouthed Mashaba who has all of a sudden become arrogant and giving SA's false confidence& his boys running round the pitch like schoolboys.

Referee tried her best to give Banyana a win but nothing came, its better that Banyana Banyana played under Mkhonza that this one, they are losing ball so cheap n they are lacking good goal keeper,

Now i think all the South African Fans can acknowledged that Nigeria is still a force to reckon with when it comes to football in Africa. But the Banyana banyana showed a lot of qualities and i see them getting better and better. Best of Luck next time and i wish they qualify for 3rd Spot bcos am sure that SAFA will not leave any stone unturned in preparing there girls.

Bayana Bayana did so well, this game could have gone either way,but the Super Falcons were luckier. This is not the type of game you say,the better side won,no, not this one, both teams were wonderful. Although, one good thing to take from this game,is that Bayana Bayana must have a spot for Canada Women's World Cup, I am quite sure about this, no doubt! Go Bayana Bayana,go girls, go for it, you  have a really good team.

Banyana Banyana I said you are coming to Canada and knew this from the way you are playing. So do not loose focus because the world are looking forward to see you girls in Canada. We need African team who can  compete with any one you put in their face, and give good account of themselves and Africa. So with what I have seen so far Banyana Banyana will able to do that in Canada, no doubt.
