Maritzburg United Platinum Stars PSL

Posted: 18 October 2014 Time: 21:17

Goals by Mondli Cele and Ntuthuko Mabaso, as well an injury-time penalty by Kurt Lentjies, gave Maritzburg United the three points as they beat Platinum Stars 3-1 at Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night.

Dikwena were under pressure from the first minute as Steve Komphela’s side came with a mission to claim the spoils.

Cele netted after just 10 minutes, before Mabaso doubled the lead four minutes later with an excellent first-time finish.

On 20 minutes Mogakolodi Ngele managed to unleash a powerful shot, but Ghanaian defender John Paintsil blocked his effort.

Maritzburg midfielder Nhlanhla Vilakazi wasted an opportunity in the 41st minute after goalkeeper Kabelo Dambe’s erratic handling as the hosts took a 2-0 lead into the break.

Towards the hour mark, coach Allan Freese introduced Robert Ng’ambi and Ndumiso Mabena. The duo managed to take the game to United, with Eleazar Rodgers having a goal ruled out for offside in the 69th minute.

Stars were the better side towards the dying minutes of the game as Rodgers saw his effort parried by Vries, before Mabena halved the deficit with a free-kick six minutes from time.

But any hopes of a comeback were dashed in injury-time when Lentjies scored a penalty to ensure Komphela’s charges claimed the three points.

What happened to the once mighty Platinum stars? To be honest this team always perform when playing the big 3. Mr. Freeze will be shown the door if he doesn't change this team's fortunes. Anyway Maritzburg United are a tough team with an excellent coach Mr English Khompela. To bra Stevovo good job well done.
