Bafana, Congo in dull Afcon 2015 draw

Posted: 15 October 2014 Time: 22:21

South Africa will have to wait a while longer for 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualification following a dull 0-0 draw against Congo at a cold and wet Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.

Bafana Bafana could have booked their place at the finals in Morocco next year with three points, but as it stands they still top the group and will back themselves to secure passage in their next game, at home to Sudan.

LIVE AS IT HAPPENED

Congo coach Claude Le Roy had made three changes to his side from the one that lost 2-0 in Pointe Noire four days ago, while Shakes Mashaba had one injury-enforced change – Sibusiso Khumalo coming in for Thabo Matlaba.

Bafana started the match slightly better and had a chance in the ninth minute when Tokelo Rantie burst down the right and beat one defender in the box, but his square-ball only found a defender and the moment was lost.

With Bafana’s usual possession and quick passing game missing, Congo slowly made their way back into the game and, 10 minutes before the break, had the best chance of the half.

A corner found it’s way to the unmarked Ndinga, but Senzo Meyiwa did brilliantly to dive down to his left and palm the ball to safety.

Bafana’s struggles continued after the break, and on the hour-mark the home crowd had their hearts in their mouths when Congo had the ball in the back of the net, with a set-piece again undoing the hosts, but the ‘goal’ was rightfully ruled offside.

Mashaba rang the changes as Kermit Erasmus and Oupa Manyisa came on, and immediately the home side started finding some rhythm.

On 77 minutes Bafana came close when the hard-working Rantie burst into the box again. He was tackled, but the ball fell to Mandla Masango, who fired just wide of the upright.

Erasmus fired wide from a lovely move shortly after, and two minutes from time and it was even closer when Manyisa’s backheel allowed Masango space and time to fire home, but the Orlando Pirates midfielder was offside in the build-up.

So honours shared, meaning Bafana remain top on eight points, one ahead of Congo. Nigeria, who beat Sudan 3-1 in an earlier match, are third on four points.

Congo is a good team of late and the rankings is just one of the indicators of that they certainly wanted to make the game very difficult for us today with a stronger display than we saw in the previous game. That said today our attack was a bit lethargic and it only really came to the fore after changes were made. But well done to the boys.

Shakes must limit media he failed us today buy revealing the weakest link in that Congo team while we still have a game with them no one would have failed to do a correction with a memorandum given n went on to say he won't change anything in the previous lineup that should have been kept a secret until we are done with them Congo made 3 changes from their previous lineup and that says a lot

gobetsefc Nothing wrong with our strikers but i must admit that they are not of quality CF.i thought we needed to keep the ball but we failed to do that.Really shows that Shakes isn't really good tactically to put an extra middlefield like yeye or manyisa to have control of the play.

On a day and taking into account weather conditions I will take a draw and walk away. Now focus must be to get 3 point in Nigeria otherwise even draw will be fine.

I don't think sibusiso khumalo is better than phungwayo, masilela, mashaba and punch so going foward if matlaba is injured we need to have to consider some of those guys.in right back we need mobara as back up

We are spoiled in the midfield,we still have patosi, mokotjo, maluleka, lebese who I think should be given a chance also.

Lastly our forwards who have been given a chance are useless...I don't know what's special about ndulula, rantie just runs with the ball and does not know what to do with it,I think he should change his career. We need smart strikers like major, erasmus, zulu and parker.

#bafana I believe

We should have taken their passports maybe he was not going raise that flat though it was offside.

On a serious note:

Our full backs let us down or maybe they played to instructions. They gave us nothing going forward and as a results Masango and Serero were playing too wide and not involved in play and that forced long balls.

Masango got better in the 2nd half after the subs.

We needed full backs that can be in charge of the whole touch line, (maybe the Tbos injury was a blow after all) that would have allowed Mandla and Thulane to play more in side and involved in short passes and that's their strengths after all they are not old fashion wingers that will always run to bi-line and cross the ball.

Somethings I can't say ngivinjwa ukholo.

Overall it was just an okayish game and am honestly not comfortable with the games going to the wire, we are not good with do-or-die games.

Did u see any shot on target? If u say no then that says a lot coz their coach made sure that he closes bafana very quick to unable them from shooting

Consequences of a lack of leadership… Jali you need to guide your team vocally as well…

Otherwise it was a coaches showpiece… an ego battle between the 2 with non wanting to fold… we have punched above our weight so far… that Congo team is structured and mature only lacking intensity and speed….

Msheke, team selection is still letting us down slightly…  lets work on that Mhlekazi please….

Those two midget that came on in the second half could not change the game instead as expected from the substitute. We are now told to work with Shakes instead of being against him just because he fielded players from their favourite team who are bunch of loosers after reaching five cup finals and win only one. The truth shall set me free.......let's hear Congolese are preventing us to build from the back. They closing us very quick. The mistake we doing is not to attack them through wing play

KING? And his patronizing comments...who's working against him? some people gotta start living and stop making this blog their personal diaries. People get sooo emotional for s##t...

It's a game the lads would want to forget, but they not on the right track(points wise). They can do better, that's all.
