Bafana, Congo in dull Afcon 2015 draw

Posted: 15 October 2014 Time: 22:21

South Africa will have to wait a while longer for 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualification following a dull 0-0 draw against Congo at a cold and wet Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.

Bafana Bafana could have booked their place at the finals in Morocco next year with three points, but as it stands they still top the group and will back themselves to secure passage in their next game, at home to Sudan.

Congo coach Claude Le Roy had made three changes to his side from the one that lost 2-0 in Pointe Noire four days ago, while Shakes Mashaba had one injury-enforced change – Sibusiso Khumalo coming in for Thabo Matlaba.

Bafana started the match slightly better and had a chance in the ninth minute when Tokelo Rantie burst down the right and beat one defender in the box, but his square-ball only found a defender and the moment was lost.

With Bafana’s usual possession and quick passing game missing, Congo slowly made their way back into the game and, 10 minutes before the break, had the best chance of the half.

A corner found it’s way to the unmarked Ndinga, but Senzo Meyiwa did brilliantly to dive down to his left and palm the ball to safety.

Bafana’s struggles continued after the break, and on the hour-mark the home crowd had their hearts in their mouths when Congo had the ball in the back of the net, with a set-piece again undoing the hosts, but the ‘goal’ was rightfully ruled offside.

Mashaba rang the changes as Kermit Erasmus and Oupa Manyisa came on, and immediately the home side started finding some rhythm.

On 77 minutes Bafana came close when the hard-working Rantie burst into the box again. He was tackled, but the ball fell to Mandla Masango, who fired just wide of the upright.

Erasmus fired wide from a lovely move shortly after, and two minutes from time and it was even closer when Manyisa’s backheel allowed Masango space and time to fire home, but the Orlando Pirates midfielder was offside in the build-up.

So honours shared, meaning Bafana remain top on eight points, one ahead of Congo. Nigeria, who beat Sudan 3-1 in an earlier match, are third on four points.

We lacked aggressiveness in the final 3rd tonight we should have wrapped it up and booked our plane tickets to Morrocco but I guess we'll have to wait a while longer #KCInspire

"Dull" game ? really ? well it was not very interesting but I have watched worse Bafana games before...I think we were just disappointed cause we believed that we will walk all over Congo and it was not the case

We need to make sure that we beat Sudan because its gonna be hard in Abuja!

Its not lost yet,but we didn't even trouble their goal keeper. Serero was no where in this game! Sudan's game is a must win.

Look we went to Congo knowing that this team they are no pushovers, they are a very tough opponent. This is the same team that got 3 points away against the super eagles and we went and got 3 points in their own backyard were we actually thought a draw would be the best possible results for us.

Because we have beaten them in their own backyard it doesn't make them a weaker opponent playing at home, we knew they were going to come back stronger. .matter of fact getting a draw at home against this team isn't the worst results at all.

we gotten carried away with our recent results in such a way that we forgot this boys are still new and young and have done the unthinkable under the circumstances. .if it was the old bafana they wouldn't even have got a single point against sudan

so really complaining about tonight's results is premature and a lil bit hypocritical if u ask me

Honestly speaking the group is much tougher to Nigeria than it is to SA , that point has qualified SA to Morocco , even if BB lose in Abuja that will only take Nigeria to 7 points , their away game against Congo will bring them down

Professor_ Dankie, I think we just had high and unrealistic expectations for this game.

He should have changed the line up a bit.....ur Ndululas, Khumalo, Serero and Masangos should have been rested. But am not complaining much coz we didn't loose.

We seem to loose our way and attacking when ever Ndulula is substituted. Shakes needs to find another big striker that can hold the ball since he does not seem to trust David zulu. Two more speedy and skillful wingers are needed

We have a solid team with good back 5 and good middle fielders but if we want to be unstoppable in Africa we need strikers who can score and be physical and I won't suggest anything but we need goals since we rarely conceded

Not impressed at all with how we played.I thought we needed more man power in the middle to boss the play.Dean Furman was the only player visible in the middle.I thought Shakes would take out Ndulula and put Yeye to strengthen our play.Football is really funny sometimes i think those guys from Congo they really showed tonight that they play in big European leagues. They seemed to be comfortable.Their association not doing them any favours whatsoever playing on the artificial pitch.Overall we've got 4 points from them we just need to beat Sudan and we qualify
