Where does Drogba’s goal rank?

Posted: 13 October 2014 Time: 10:16

Bongani Ndulula netted the opening goal in Bafana Bafana’s famous 2-0 win against Congo this weekend – and it was a cracker reminiscent of Thabo Mngomeni’s overhead-kick against the same opposition 14 years ago.

Here are 12 great Bafana goals. Where would ‘Drogba’s’ effort in Pointe Noire rank?

Hlompho Kekana

11 January 2014
African Nations Championship
SA 3 Mozambique 1
The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder got the ball just past the halfway line and, with seemingly little danger for the opposition, let rip with a thunderbolt from 35-yards out which left Mambas goalkeeper Soarito clutching at air.

John Moshoeu

13 January 1996
Africa Cup of Nations, Soccer City
SA 3 Cameroon 0
With Bafana Bafana leading 2-0 against mighty Cameroon in the opening match of the 1996 Nations Cup, Shoes Moshoeu scored a goal that suddenly had the entire nation believing ‘we can do this’. It starts with Cameroon hoofing a clearance; Eric Tinkler flies in to intercept with his head and powers on, holding off his man so that Moshoeu can pick up the ball and dart forward. Shoes cuts inside, slips a pass to Phil Masinga, whose instant response is to deftly backheel a return to Moshoeu that opens up the Cameroon defence. Shoes surges into the area, rides a tackle and confidently slots past the keeper.

Doctor Khumalo

24 April 1996
Friendly, Soccer City
SA 2 Brazil 3
A run down the right wing from Helman Mkhalele, a cross that Phil Masinga seeks to flick on, and the ball falls to the edge of the area where Khumalo follows up with a shot on the half-volley with his right foot that rifles past Dida in the Brazilian goal.

Teko Modise

20 November 2007
Friendly, King’s Park Rugby Stadium
SA 2 Canada 0
The midfield maestro was at the height of his powers when he scored a magnificent goal against Canada in Durban. It showed off his trickery, anticipation, skill, movement and arrogance, and was a superb solo effort. The ball was laid back to him outside the box and Modise first dummied an on-rushing defender with a clever swerve of the body before hammering home.

David Nyathi

22 February 1998
Africa Cup of Nations
Municipal Stadium, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
SA 2 Morocco 1
Nyathi only scored one international goal, but it came at a crucial time, and it was a beauty. With their Nations Cup quarter-final against Morocco evenly poised at 1-1 and heading for extra-time, the full-back stormed down the left, cut inside and then absolutely belted the ball home from distance – with his right foot!

Siphiwe Tshabalala

11 June 2010
World Cup, Soccer City
SA 1 Mexico 1
Bafana had been outplayed in the opening 55 minutes of the World Cup opener, but then came a piece of brilliance that will forever give Tshabalala his place in Bafana folklore. Kagisho Dikgacoi supplied a through-ball from midfield and the winger blasted in a left-footer from outside the area that flashed across the Mexican goalkeeper.

Siphiwe Tshabalala

31 March 2010
Friendly, Defensores del Chaco Stadium, Asuncion, Paraguay
Paraguay 1 SA 1
Shabba does not do tap-ins for the national side, and among his array of excellent goals, this was another real highlight. In a pre-World Cup friendly in Paraguay in 2010, he picks up the ball in the centre circle, runs forward a few yards and then hammers home from 35-yards to give the goalkeeper no chance.

Shaun Bartlett

31 January 1996
Africa Cup of Nations, Soccer City
SA 3 Ghana 0
It was the Nations Cup semi-final, and it pitted hosts South Africa against a highly fancied Ghana. Shoes Moshoeu got two that night, but in between was a sublime goal from Bartlett straight from the second-half kick-off as he ran onto a long ball and hammered home a volley that required great technique to keep down.

Katlego Mphela

28 June 2009
Confederations Cup
Royal Bafokeng Stadium
SA 2 Spain 3
Bafana had led deep into the second half thanks to a Mphela goal, but then conceded twice in a minute and were now staring at a miserable defeat. But with seconds remaining South Africa won a free-kick 35-yards out. Up stepped Mphela to smash home a swerving free-kick that gave Iker Casillas absolutely no chance.

Thabo Matlaba

23 March 2013
World Cup qualifier, Cape Town Stadium
SA 2 Central African Republic 0
Matlaba, playing at left-back, picked the ball up in midfield and belted a blistering right-footed shot from long range that twisted and turned and then dipped into the net in what was at the time a crucial World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic in Cape Town.

Thabo Mngomeni

3 September 2000
Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, Municipal Stadium, Pointe-Noire, Congo
Congo 1 SA 2
This goal was all about technique and timing from Mngomeni. The dreadlocked midfielder executed a perfect bicycle kick to hand South Africa a 2-1 away success in Congo. It was so good that it won the award for the Goal of the Year at the Confederation of African Football awards.

Phil Masinga

16 August 1997
World Cup qualifier, Soccer City
SA 1 Congo 0
This long-range drive against Congo in the World Cup qualifiers in 1997 ensured a 1-0 win at a tense Soccer City in a match in which Bafana were actually outplayed; more to the point, it sent South Africa to the 1998 World Cup finals in France. There seemed little on when Masinga latched onto a bouncing ball 30-yards from goal, but as the ball sat up, he connected perfectly on the half-volley to surprise everyone in the stadium, including the Congo keeper and the boo-boys among the fans, who were all sent wild with joy.
