Mamelodi Sundowns vs University of Pretoria Telkom Knockout

Posted: 4 October 2014 Time: 17:20

Elias Pelembe scored a stunning winner as Mamelodi Sundowns beat University of Pretoria 2-1 at Loftus Stadium to progress to the Telkom Knockout quarterfinals.

The Brazilians took the lead on 35 minutes through Themba Zwane, who deflected Tebogo Langerman's long-range effort past Washington Arubi.

AmaTuks were level on 72 minutes when a lapse in defence allowed Geoffrey Massa to fire a volley past Kennedy Mweene.

But just before halftime in extra-time, Pelembe produced some magic in the area, controlling Cuthbert Malajila's flick-on before beating one defender and firing a stunner past the goalie.

Tuks were quickly on the back foot as Sundowns applied heaps of pressure on their cross-town rivals.

Arubi proved to be the only man able to thwart the home side. He was often the last line of defence against a Downs team looking threatening with every touch of the ball.

Cuthbert Malajila had a fierce volley saved, while Teko Modise’s shot from a tight angle was also parried.

But Sundowns would not be kept out for long; Langerman sending the home side ahead after 36 minutes with a seemingly wayward shot from distance.

The effort, however, took a nasty touch off Zwane, which caught the Zimbabwean goalkeeper off-guard and allowed the ball to trickle into the back of the net.

Tuks had a much more positive start to the second half and managed to keep Sundowns on the back-foot.

Substitute Massa looked lively from the moment he got onto the field and eventually silenced the home crowd on 72 minutes when poor defending on the edge of the area allowed the striker to put his foot through the ball and thunder home past Kennedy Mweene, who hardly had a save to make up to that point.

The game settled down as the clock wound down and soon referee Robert Smith signalled the end of 90 minutes, meaning extra-time.

Tuks were hoping to keep Sundowns at bay for as long as possible, but eight minutes into extra-time, Pelembe grabbed the winner with a superb touch and turn to send Pitso Mosimane’s men into the quarters.

Malabulabu If you read too much into that pirates scoreline, you clearly don't watch games or don't know football. I will therefore not talk to you cause you are clearly on a very lower level than myself. I thank you

Beerginner I would love to say I concur, but in actual fact I don't even know why those two were signed in the first place.

Just by their body shapes, they can't fit in swagger interplay of shoe-shine-and-piano.

We really don't have a coach, how do play Niang ahead of Ejike and Mahoota? He should keep thanking the individual brilliance from our players.. kby

Weezy*F* Beerginner Very true. I like what the fans did today when Pitso tried to introduce Arendse when Ezoenyi was available

This thing of our coach playing niang is killing our rethm and pitso must start using ejike more now because the boy is hungry for game time

Beerginner Pitso and the management need to swallow their pride and do spring cleaning in Chloorkop, there are just too many used condoms in our arsenal

Because Ejike is a middle fielder, and Mahoota has not been delivering lately (as a striker)...

I saw Pitso not wanting to shake Maqhoba Mqhithi's hand. Is there something there?

If given a chance would do better than Pitso? Let Pitso do what he is qualified for and you sit on the couch and be a loyal supporter if that is difficult for you there are 15 other teams in the PSL you can cross the floor to, Sundowns does not need negative suppoters like you.

From a sincere Downs supporter, I honestly can't see a team here just good players. Our coach is really making me wonder now, he signed good players thinking that he'll just field them and everything will be fine. Anyways we won I'm happy well done to the boys.

JBviaKBY I see an improvement from the start of the season. The only problem I have is that there seems to be no player to replce Teko and Hlompho in that central midfield

To all those who doubt Pitso's ability as a coach, lemme remind you. He won us the league just recently with a very depleted squad, it was Pitso's tactics that we won 10 games consecutively and beat all our hodoo teams.

Um also not happy with his squad selection at the moment but please let us not use emotions when commenting here, state your grievances and never undermine our coach's intellect.

Whosoever uses emotions to analyse football matters shall feel Weezy's wrath
