Bidvest Wits vs Moroka Swallows

Posted: 3 October 2014 Time: 19:39

Bidvest Wits got the 2014 Telkom Knockout off to an entertaining start with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Moroka Swallows on Friday night.

The Clever Boys scored their goals through Jabulani Shongwe, Buhle Mkhwanazi and Vincent Pule at the Bidvest Stadium and have become the first team to book a place in Monday’s quarterfinal draw.

Wits started the match strongly and created a great chance to open the scoring as early as the seventh minute. Vincent Pule played a one-two that put him one-on-one with goalkeeper Sage Stephens, but he opted for a poor pass instead of taking on the responsibility himself.

The Birds offered little in attack, but almost got lucky in the 24th minute. A free kick from Dikgang Mabalane was met by a Wits defender, but the ball rebounded off Ashraf Hendricks and nearly crept into the home side’s net.

However, Wits got their just rewards for a strong first half performance when Jabulani Shongwe put them ahead 10 minutes before the break. The former Mamelodi Sundowns man curled a beautiful left-footed shot into the top corner from 20 metres out to put the hosts 1-0 up.

It took just 15 minutes of the second half for the Clever Boys to double their advantage. Sameehg Doutie provided a perfect in-swinging corner kick from the left and Buhle Mkhwanazi powered home an unstoppable header at the near post to make it 2-0 on the hour mark.

Six minutes later it was 3-0. Some slick passing from Wits saw Doutie whip in another fine cross, this time from the right flank, and youngster Vincent Pule arrived at the far post to steer home a perfectly executed left-footed volley.

Downs must come to the rescue of Swallows by loaning few players. Zebbies tried with Baloyi but he's not adding value because he's a cow.

@MoneyTalksHatersWalk Don't be hard on boys. Baloyi was playing leftback in this game. What is that? He is a central midfielder for crying out loud. They set him up for failure deliberately. Sheriff is a hard worker by nature.
