PSL Absa Premiership: SuperSport United vs Platinum Stars

Posted: 13 September 2014 Time: 17:47

SuperSport United beat Platinum Stars 3-1 as Gordon Igesund got off to a winning start at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Bradley Grobler scored a brace and Gift Sithole scored at both ends of the pitch in an entertaining match.

The first goal came for Stars from Patrick Malokase's free-kick as Sithole looped a header back across Ronwen Williams and into the far corner.

SuperSport's equaliser was another looping header from the same player, this time unfortunate to head Thabo Moloi's long-throw over Siyabonga Mpontshane to level the score.

Matsatsantsa stepped it up a gear in the second half as Grobler scored with two good finishes to seal the result. His first was a solid left-footed finish into the bottom corner from Princer Nxumalo's cutback from the left, and the second was a beautiful take-down on the penalty spot and finish from Thuso Phala's left-footed, right-wing cross.

SuperSport were quickest out the blocks, with Phala and Dino Ndlovu going close for the hosts in the opening exchanges.

First Phala hit the side netting before Ndlovu blazed his attempt over the bar following a fine free-flowing move between himself and the former Dikwena winger.
It was the visitors, though, who opened the scoring through Sithole in the 17th minute. Malokase's floating free-kick found the former Golden Arrows defender, who placed his header past a stranded Williams in the SuperSport goal.
Matsatsantsa found the equaliser through a Sithole own-goal in the 38th minute. The Stars defender, who had celebrated a goal 21 minutes earlier, was left shaking his head after he nodded a long-throw from Moloi past his own keeper.
Mogakolodi Ngele tested Williams’ agility after the break, with the Matsatsantsa ‘keeper doing well to get down to keep out a long-range effort from the Botswana international.
The hosts took the lead through a Grobler strike in the 57th minute. Second-half substitute Nxumalo did well to hustle the ball from a Platinum Stars defender before picking out his unmarked teammate, who finished with aplomb.
Grobler doubled SuperSport’s lead in the 77th minute. The former Ajax Cape Town marksman did well to control Thuso Phala's low pass before firing past Mpontshane, 3-1.
Wome went within inches of making it four in the 83rd minute, the Togolese midfielder's powerful effort from long range had Mpontshane beaten, but not the crossbar.
The win moves SuperSport up to 11th spot while Dikwena remain in ninth place on the log.

Platinum stars is dead and freese has resigned himself to losing his job, he's just smiling there having given up. Very sad, eish! And after getting beaten, in fact trash by another dead team in Ssp united I saw mazingita not looking impressed, hardy freese man your time is up. The mabena's are missing sitters here. Once and always bucs.

This is why people always talk of the "big 3" refering to Kaizer Chiefs; Orlando Pirates & Mamelodi Sundowns (in order of greatness, the former being the biggest team in the land & the latter being the least biggest amongst the 3) because PSL teams are just so inconsistant they are 1 season wonders look @ P.Stars; Ajax & Swallows. One season they are fighting for the league honors the next they are fighting to avoid relegation.

as expected, super sport united has been resuscitated.

Nywe nywe "Gordon can only work with madalas". Gues what he does, he introduces a raw youngster in prince nxumalo, but the lack of development in mzansi is sad the guy got himself in many good situations but the quality of his shooting is amaturish. It shouldn't be that poor for someone who's already a pro.

But ya facing ssu is going to be tough now, lucky for the teams that hv already faced them while they were fumbling..
