PSL Absa Premiership: Kaizer Chiefs vs SuperSport United

Posted: 30 August 2014 Time: 19:47

Kaizer Chiefs continued their fine form after a convincing 2-0 victory over struggling SuperSport United in the Absa Premiership on Saturday night.

Goals from Mandla Masango and Kingston Nkhatha embellished another convincing display from Stuart Baxter's side as they comfortably swept aside a Cavin Johnson-less Matsatsantsa at FNB Stadium.

SuperSport adopted a cautious approach to the first half as Chiefs dictated most of the play, with George Maluleka pulling the strings well from midfield.

The Glamour Boys made most of the forward plays and forced a number of set-pieces, but were unable to make any headway from George Lebese's deliveries.

Mandla Masango had an early shout for a penalty in just the second minute of the game after Sibusiso Khumalo felled him in the penalty area but the referee waved play on.

It took until the 33rd minute for Chiefs to create their first real sight of goal as Maluleka's deft chip found a clever Lebese run into the area, but his touch was slightly heavy and Ronwen Williams was able to come out to make the block.

Two minutes later Mandla Masango and Kingston Nkhatha combined well on the edge of the area to create a chance but Nkhatha dragged his shot wide of the left upright.

In the 39th minute Willard Katsande tested his passing range with a searching ball towards Masango's run, but Mor Diouf got back to make a timely acrobatic interception to prevent the chance to shoot.

Just before half-time Williams produced a superb diving save to his right to keep out a goalbound Maluleka effort after a neat turn and shot in the area from Siboniso Gaxa's centre.

SuperSport showed more attacking intent at the start of the second period and had two long-range efforts from Roscoe Pietersen and Benett Chenene but both were straight at Itumeleng Khune.

Masango and Nkhatha were combining well with neat touches as a one-two played the former in, but his shot was tame and straight at Williams. Masango then played Letsholonyane in moments later but the latter's shot was also not effective enough.

Then came a moment of class in the 63rd minute. Masango slipped an excellent outside-foot pass through to Nkhatha, who tried to lob Williams one-on-one, but the keeper was equal to the task. But when the ball came back towards Masango on the edge of the area, a simple one-two with Letsholonyane parted the SuperSport defence for Masango to bury into the bottom-right corner.

Chiefs doubled their lead eight minutes later as Tsepo Masilela's left-wing cross was chested down by Gaxa at the far post into the path of Letsholonyane on the edge of the area. The energetic midfielder's first-time shot was miscued but found its way to Nkhatha lurking on the six-yard line and the striker had a simple tap-in.

Bernard Parker entered the fray with 12 minutes remaining as he makes his way back following ankle surgery to give coach Baxter even more options in attack after Siphiwe Tshabalala also came on early in the second half for his second appearance following a knee problem.

The home team had a couple more chances in the closing stages as Letsholonyane missed the target after a defence-splitting pass from Gaxa, Maluleka hit the frame of the goal after attempting to chip Williams and then Tshabalala's close-range shot was blocked at the last moment.

The result is Chiefs' fifth win in five League matches as they sit comfortably at the top of the early Absa Premiership table.

i don't see any team scoring a goal anytime soon even if they were to be given another 90 minute. They're just firing blanks and playing boring game.
