Celtic, Aces share the spoils

Bloemfontein Celtic and Mpumalanga Black Aces played to a 1-1 draw in their season-opening Absa Premiership match at Free State Stadium.

Tendai Ndoro had given the visitors a halftime lead, but Joel Mogorosi leveled just after the restart as the sides shared the spoils.

In an entertaing match, Aces had the better of the opening half, while Celtic - after a double substitution at the break - looked more threatening in the second 45.

The first chance of the match came on four minutes after Roger da Costa failed to clear Keegan Ritchie’s cross from the left. The ball fell to Hellings Mhango, but his shot on the turn was just over the bar.

Ten minutes later and Ritchie showed his defensive skills, heading a dangerous cross clear after goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb failed to reach the ball.

Tignyemb then redeemed himself minutes later when he palmed Ndoro’s to safety.

Joel Mogorosi and Lyle Lakay fired shots over the bar for Celtic before Aces came closest to an opener on 39 minutes. Collins Mbesuma flicked a corner on to Eddie Ngalo, whose header was cleared off the line by Lakay.

It looked to be heading for a goalless first half before Ndoro turned on the magic. A chip over the top from Collins Mbesuma hardly seemed dangerous, but the Zimbabwean thumped a first-time volley into the net from the tightest of angles.

Celtic coach Ernst Middendorp made two changes at the break, bringing on Tumelo Mogapi and Lerato Lamola, but it was Aces who almost added to the score two minutes in.

The hosts failed to clear a corner, allowing first Da Costa a shot, which was blocked, before Ngalo blasted over from 10 yards out.

Mhango then had a deflected shot saved before the equaliser on 54 minutes. Mogorosi scored after Lamola created it with a brilliant run down the left, but Ngalo and goalie Energy Marambadoro really should have done better in clearing the ball.

Mhango and Aubrey Ngoma had shots from distance which troubled the keepers, but the closest anyone got to adding to the score was on 85 minutes.

Mogorosi ran down the right and put in a cross which found Lamola, but the striker’s effort from close range lacked power and was easily gathered by Murambadoro.

Edwin Gyimah and Mzuvukile Tom made two late blocks to keep Aces in the game and deny Celtic a perfect start to the season.
