Ngcobo penalty sinks SuperSport

A second-half penalty from Sthembiso Ngcobo secured a 1-0 Absa Premiership win for Bidvest Wits over SuperSport United on Saturday evening.
SuperSport failed to convert several chances on the night at Lucas Moripe Stadium and were ultimately punished in the 70th minute when Michael Morton brought down Ngcobo inside the area.
Matsatsantsa were the better team in the first half with Bradley Grobler, Thuso Phala and Lebogang Manyama causing the Wits defence all sorts of problems.
Cavin Johnson's men found space in behind the Clever Boys defence, but Jackson Mabokgwane, who was the hero in Wits' penalty shootout win over Bloemfontein Celtic last week, again looked to be on top form as he made a number of key interceptions to keep out the hosts.
SuperSport should have taken the lead six minutes into the second half following a swift move from the back.
Morton played Manyama into space on the left flank, the former Ajax Cape Town winger then picked out Bradley Grobler at the far post with a precise outside-of-the-foot cross, but the SuperSport striker somehow missed the target from three metres out.
Wits were awarded a spot-kick 20 minutes from time following a foul inside the area by Morton on Sibusiso Vilakazi. The midfield hardman seemed to win the ball fairly, but the referee saw it otherwise and pointed to the spot, and Ngcobo converted.
Benett Chenene and Morton tested Mabokgwane in the final minutes of the game, but the Wits shot-stopper was proving hard to beat as the Students held on for all three points.
The loss subsequently places a dark cloud over Matsatsantsa, who were eager to bounce back not only from last week's loss in the MTN8, but also the disappointing end to last season.
