Mamelodi Sundowns 1-1 Maritzburg United

Posted: 8 August 2014 Time: 19:28

A 90th minute Mohammed Awal penalty secured a 1-1 draw for Maritzburg United against defending Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Stadium on Friday evening.

Katlego Mashego's early strike looked to have sealed all three points for the Brazilians, but a late spot-kick handed the Team of Choice a point.

Mame Niang made an immediate impact at his new club as he set-up Mashego for the opener with only two minutes on the clock.

Niang played Elias Pelembe's chip into the path of Mashego, who made no mistake from close-range to net the opening goal of the League season.

The Team of Choice went close through Van Wyk, who was spectacularly denied by Wayne Sandilands at his near post in the 6th minute.

Both sides continued to showcase an attacking brand of football.

Niang had a golden opportunity to open his account at the club following a goalkeeping blunder by Shu-aib Walters on the stroke of half-time, but the lanky forward could only manage to direct his effort wide of goal.

The goalmouth action died down in the second stanza with chances few and far between and with 20 minutes of regulation time remaining it seemed as if Sundowns were shutting up shop as Mosimane brought on centre back Mario Booysen for Percy Tau.

Niang went from hero to villain when he fouled Mondi Cele in the final minute of regulation time.

Victor Gomes pointed to the spot and Awal did the rest to make the final score 1-1.

It was going to happen soon; after all has been said and done, cheque books closed, pens dropped and time for real business came. LoanDowns will be closely watched because of the attention they brought during the open window period; it is not by curiosity that almost everyone who follows football is watching the delivery in the field of play with keen interest. It is fair to expect LoanDowns to start off on a high, no justification for 1 point, at home nogal. Pitso will be tested and streched.

Am still saying; to the 11 that did not win yesterday for LoanDowns, they know that another 228 was warming up outside, elsewhere. Never seen a team where teammates wish that another set under-performs so that they too can play.

KING?  jenjelizer rikhosi Also the 3 points they collected won them the league. It is always expected that at home, defending champions, with "enough resources, enough personnel and numbers" must get off to a good start (a win). A draw becomes a fair result when the team plays away...

Downs hv themselves to blame, that ws nt a big team demonstration. Kuze kwaba ngconywana after the introduction of Themba Zwane. But if they are going to play like that, we'll always laugh at them with their big mouth coach.

Buc-champ 14 Dude truth of the matter is that in soccer there's no could've or should've or else everyone would win the league. Sundowns did what they were supposed to do and won 11 games in a row...meaning that we did good enough to win the league whereas your team was so close yet so far. How do you say a club that won 11 games was handed the league by a team that won 9 games..? One simply wins the league by winning and acquiring points unfortunately your didn't do that...hence Downs did it won the league.
