Best & Worst of the Weekend

Posted: 4 August 2014 Time: 10:30

The 2014/15 season officially kicked off this weekend with some stunning performances from the Soweto giants, as well as MTN8 champions Platinum Stars. Here are the best and worst …

Goal of the Weekend: Kermit Erasmus showed great composure in chipping Ronwen Williams for Orlando Pirates’ second goal, but without a doubt the best goal was scored by the much-maligned Kingston Nkhatha. He flicked the ball up with his first touch and volleyed in off the underside of the crossbar for his second – from 25 metres out!

Player of the Week: Thandani Ntshumayelo was named Man of the Match, but for our money Thabo Matlaba was the best player on show. A livewire for Bucs as he bombed down the left all game, constantly creating problems for the SuperSport defence. He also set up the opening goal for Daine Klate which set Pirates on the way to victory.

A week to forget for: Amid all the hype of their pre-season signings, a lot more was expected of Mpumalanga Black Aces, but a woeful defensive display cost them big time. However, this ‘award’ must go to Mamelodi Sundowns left-back Tebogo Langerman, who was at fault for both Platinum Stars’ goals. Even Pitso Mosimane was unforgiving on the player’s performance in the post-match interviews.

Moment of the Week: Veteran commentator Mark Gleeson summed it up on Twitter when he said ‘Never in my life’. That was in a response to a question on whether he had ever seen something like the bees that gathered behind the Dikwena goal and held up play for 11 minutes.

Words of the Week: “You can go and write that we parked the bus – yes, we did, but the strategy was to park it with a driver and go forward quickly. You must also write that the wheels were not taken off and the bus also moved forward a little bit.” Dikwena coach Allan Freese after their victory against Mamelodi Sundowns

Honestly Nkatha's goal is the best goal of the week unless week ends on Saturday night.

Supersport News report:

Then the other “Brazilians” – Mamelodi Sundowns - rolled out their big GUNS against the Dikwena but it appeared the defending league champions forgot to load AMMUNITION as they were easily dispatched 2-1 by Platinum Stars

The main talking point from that game was not the result. It was a hive of bees that nested on one of the microphones behind the Stars goalkeeper. Talk was that the bright Sundowns COLOURS had attracted the bees while others asserted that it was some Downs juju-men who tried to avoid the hiding.

I agree with those who says Thabo Matlaba was the best player on Saturday night and probably across the weekend..! He had a blinder of a game and I was surprised that Nshumayelo was named Man of the Match..!!
