MTN8 Match Report: Orlando Pirates 2-1 SuperSport United

Posted: 2 August 2014 Time: 20:06

Orlando Pirates secured a comfortable 2-1 win over SuperSport United in their MTN8 quarter-final match at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.

First-half goals from Daine Klate and Kermit Erasmus proved enough for Pirates, while David Mathebula pulled back a beautiful goal for the visitors.

The start of the match saw the Buccaneers controlling the flow of play, but they struggled to really create any decent openings in front of goal.

SuperSport on the other hand couldn’t hold onto the ball for a sustained period of play and never really threatened the Pirates goal.

The Buccaneers' first decent chance of the half fell to Erasmus in the 10th minute when Mpho Makola cleverly slipped him through on goal, but his timid 14-yard shot was well saved by Ronwen Williams.

United’s only decent effort came in the 24th minute, and it was their first shot on goal, when Thusa Phala saw his 30-yard grass-cutter superbly touched around the post by a diving Senzo Meyiwa.

Just after the half-hour mark Pirates made their dominance count when Klate controlled a low left-wing cross from Matlaba before tucking the ball home from 12-yards out, 1-0.

Klate then turned provider in the 39th minute when he slipped Erasmus through on goal and he showed real composure to chip the onrushing Williams to double his side’s lead before half-time, 2-0.

Erasmus then had a golden opportunity to make it 3-0 just before half-time when he was played through one-on-one with Williams, but he dragged his shot wide.

The start of the second 45 saw Pirates continue to dictate matters and Thabo Matlaba should have scored their third in the 52nd minute when he hit the woodwork from 14 yards out under no pressure and with an empty net at his mercy.

SuperSport tried to mount a comeback and did manage to pull a goal back in the 69th minute when a smart ball over the top from Thato Mokeke saw David Mathebula through on goal and he made no mistake from six-yards out, controlling beautifully and slotting into the far corner, 2-1.

That set up an exciting final 20 minutes, but the Buccaneers managed to hold on to seal their place in the semi-finals of the top eight competition.
