Wits through to the semis

Posted: 1 August 2014 Time: 19:53

Bidvest Wits have reached the MTN8 semi-finals after they beat visiting Bloemfontein Celtic 4-3 on penalties after 120 minutes of goalless action.

It was an end-to-end typical Cup tie with plenty of strong tackles and close goal scoring chances.

In the end though there had to be one winner and Celtic defender Limbikani Mzava unfortunately missed the decisive penalty. Wits ‘keeper Jackson Mabokgwane, however, did well to make the save.

Joel Mogorosi nearly opened the scoring right in the first minute of the game, but Jackson Mabokgwane, standing in for the injured Moeneeb Josephs, took care of the danger.

The home side’s first real opportunity at goal arrived after 17 minutes when debutant Henrico Botes got his head to a cross but could not get much power behind the goal attempt.

Just before half time, another new face for Wits, Toriq Losper, played Sibusiso Vilakazi through on goal and Vilakazi then turned his man and found Ryan Chapman but he skied his shot.

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt made two changes fairly early in the second half, bringing on Dillon Sheppard and Sthembiso Ngcobo for Jabulani Shongwe and Ryan Chapman respectively in the 61st minute.

Sheppard made a big difference with some intelligent passing, accurate set piece delivery and this allowed the home side to keep the ball a little longer.

But still neither team could find the back of the net and in the 82nd minute, Wits went close when Nhlapo’s powerful cross from the right wing found Vilakazi’s head, but his attempt was saved well by a diving Tignyemb.

In the dying seconds of regulation time, Onismor Bhasera got through on goal and had a great scoring chance put sent his shot wide of goal.

During the extra time period defender S’boniso Gumede got onto a Sheppard set piece and powered his header against the woodwork.

Celtic’s Lerato Lamola gave the home side a few scared during the extra time period but the game would go to penalties to decide a winner.

Hey it was boring under any circumstances, the stadium was empty, the flowing of the ball was also boring and poor.

The worse part of our football is to see empty stadium, that is the clear indication that our football is really out of fashion. No body is worried about it because we even struggling to identify our style of play. What a hell with Wits and Celtic competing in premier League in South Africa.
