Orlando Pirates win Carling Black Label Cup against Kaizer Chiefs

Posted: 26 July 2014 Time: 16:18

Orlando Pirates won the Carling Black Label Cup 6-5 on penalties against Kaizer Chiefs at Soccer City on Saturday.

Ninety minutes produced a goalless draw, with Chiefs' George Maluleka missing a penalty in regulation time, as well as in the marathon shoot-out.

Thabo Matlaba delivered the decisive blow from the spot to claim honours and bragging rights for the Nedbank Cup holders.

Both teams, though, sustained injury scares, as Kingston Nkhatha and Happy Jele failed to complete the pre-season contest.

In a dull derby, Oupa Manyisa tried to liven up affairs with a long-range shot in the 12th minute. However, Pirates' reigning player of the season dragged his attempt wide.

Chiefs, who won the event last year, then suffered a setback midway through the opening stanza, as striker Nkhatha picked up a knock after colliding heavily with Bucs goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa. The Zimbabwean hobbled off the field and was replaced by Amakhosi returnee Siphelele Mthembu.

The Sea Robbers proceeded to dictate affairs, as Matlaba, Jele and Kermit Erasmus all threatened without reward before the interval.

Matlaba was first to test Glamour Boys goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, as his powerful 20-yard strike was swallowed up by the national skipper in the 34th minute.

Four minutes later Jele headed narrowly over off a a telling free-kick from the right by Daine Klate.

Soon after Erasmus fired a left-footed shot on target, but Khune was well-placed to deny the former SuperSport United hitman.

Stuart Baxter's outfit showed intent after the recess, as Willard Katsande drew an ugly stop from Meyiwa with a useful crack on goal in the 48th minute.

Both sides made changes in the 54th minute as per the competition's format, with fans voting for the introduction of Josta Dladla and Issa Sarr. Dladla, who recently served a drugs ban, replaced Katlego Mphela for Chiefs, while Pirates newcomer Sarr came on for Tlou 'Sox' Segolela.

Two minutes later Buccaneers coach Vladimir Vermezovic was forced to bring on the versatile Ntsikelelo Nyauza for right-back Jele, who was stretchered off with a chest complaint.

Baxter's outfit should have taken the lead in the 66th minute, but Maluleka struck the cross bar from the spot after George Lebese was felled in the box by a silly challenge from Rooi Mahamutsa.

Moments later Lebese triggered a fine stop from Meyiwa at his near post with a well-hit shot.

Vermezovic made a string of substitutions in the latter stages, as he brought on Lennox Bacela, Mpho Makola, youngster Maselaelo Seanego and Thandani Ntshumayelo for Lehlohonolo Majoro, Sifiso Myeni, Daine Klate and Erasmus respectively.

Baxter, meanwhile, opted to inject the attack-minded Mandla Masango at the expense of Reneilwe Letsholonyane in the final minute.

Penalty sequence:

Chiefs: Masango scored, Maluleka missed, Dladla scored, Lebese scored, Katsande scored, Mathoho missed, Mthembu scored, Mashamite missed, Gaxa missed.

Pirates: Bacela scored, Manyisa scored, Sangweni missed, Makola scored, Sarr scored, Seanego missed, Ntshumayelo scored, Mahamutsa missed, Matlaba scored.

Why a so called better team struggle to beat the so called " parking the bus teams"? As good as Bucs is in passing the ball around, they fail in the final 3rd & this has been going on for a while. Attacking is an art, equally so is defending. I like attacking football & Chiefs try balancing the 2. The Papic Bucs team was an attacking team, the current 1 trives in just maintaining possession & lack the attacking prowess. As much as Chiefs lack depth, Bucs also have an X to solve. How to unlock defensive teams & how to use the ball possession to your advantage? You can have possession, but its a useless advantage if you cant effectively utilise it. Granted so, Chiefs have their short-comings, so is Bucs. Bragging rights are nothing if u ignore the underlying problems!

Well said man. I also said it before d game starts dat Pirates will find it hard to break Chiefs defence. They got 3 central midfielders n there was no playmaker out of dat 3. Pirates had 2 attacking midfielders n Manyisa was sacrificed for defending one. Pirates dominated d centre area but no penetration. Lebese was having a cracker of a game so is Manyisa. But I'm dissapointed on ur coach. H only made one substitution which was Masango on d 90 minute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why mara? Where were d likes of Karuru, Togo striker, Nkosi etc? Nkatha was a forced one n Dlala was fan's choice. Pirates took out Majoro, Erasmus, Klate, Myeni n bring on Bacela, Makola, Bibo n d young Seanego. Tlou n Jele were forced subs. When are w gonna see d Chiefs young guns? Even during Chippa game w couldn't even see d likes of Mtsweni, Matombo, Eksteen etc. D coach need to show faith in youngsters

fortune_ COWloba MthokozisiNhlaloNcube Good morning bakaniya. I hope u enjoyed da game even though dare was nothing to talk about, apart few things. Firstly, I have 2 admit dat I was wrong as we won like u said. secondly, in my view, the game was a boring affair until da second half when da introduction of Sarr, Makola, Bibo and the youngster 'Shakes' Seanego changed da game completely, not 4getting Nyauza who I think did well after replacing Jele due 2 injury. Therefore, here is my dream starting 11 going forward: Meyiwa = GK. Rooi & Ntsimbi/Nyauza = Centre Backs. Matlaba aka 'TRANSFORMER' = Left Back. Jele = Right Back. Sarr = CDM. Ace Manyisa = CAM. Klate = Left Wing. Myeni/Segolela = Right Wing. Makola = no. 10/behind da Striker. Erasmus/Majoro = NO. 09. FORMATION = 4-5-1. Subs = Dauda. LL14. Phungwayo. Bibo. Seanego. Rakhale, cause he can play as a Winger or behind da Striker. Pelempe/Bacela. Plz tell me what u think about dis Line-up. Finally, congrats 2 da new Bafana Coach Shakes Mashaba. Enjoy ur day further and ur week.

Xinambyani hence; the score was 3:0 in favour of the mighty "buck" with all the galaxy of quality players. The fact is the game was flat and boring. I did not see anything wow! you will never enjoy quality football while praising mediocrity. There is nothing to praise in both OP and KC. I was bored to hell nx.

NKATHA is d man who  will make amakhosi catch d league if there still no new strikers signing, therefore as chiefs supporters let us support him nd stop criticizing him, what am saying hv been proved by d last derby after NKATHA get injured we start there to lose our game
