KickOff.com can confirm that Namibian international goalkeeper Virgil Vries has signed a new two-year contract with Maritzburg United.
The deal has been confirmed by the player’s business manager Jazzman Mahlakgane. “The deal is done. It is a two-year contract with an option for another year,” Mahlakgane says.
Meanwhile, Vries, with approximately 35 caps for his country since making his debut against Botswana in 2009, says he is grateful for the opportunity to continue playing in the PSL.
“It is great that Maritzburg United have shown faith in me. I have been here at the club for 18 months, but it feels like it is a new beginning for me. I played a good seven games last season [in all competitions] and as a player, I want to grow. It is all about progress,” Vries tells this website.
“I also hope that I will open doors for other goalkeepers back home to play in the PSL the same way the likes of Ronnie Kanalelo [former Sundowns goalkeeper] and former Jomo Cosmos goalkeeper Abisai Shiningayamwe did for me.
“Like I told Jazzman, he’s done his part and now it is my turn to perform for the club,” Vries adds.
