Polokwane City vs Black Leopards

Posted: 1 June 2014 Time: 15:46

Polokwane City will play in the Absa Premiership next season after a 2-1 win against Black Leopards in the final promotion play-off match at Giyani Stadium.

However, Lidoda Duvha will wonder just how they failed to come out on top after dominating most of the game and hitting the woodwork four times, while visiting goalkeeper Modiri Marumo produced a number of breathtaking saves.

Leopards will kick themselves for a poor start in which Sipho Jembula headed home a free-kick after just two minutes.

The hosts looked to hit back straight away as Orlando Pirates target Edgar Manaka came close shortly afterwards, but on 27 minutes Boebie Solomons’ team were 2-0 up when Vukile Mngqibisa netted from the spot following a foul on Jembula.

Still, Lidoda Duvha kept pushing as Modiri Marumo saved Mumumi Abubakar’s point-blank header, before Kenneth Owuso’s attempt beat the goalie, but came back off the woodwork.

Leopards came out after the break even more attacking, but luck just wasn’t on their side.

They hit the woodwork three times in 14 minutes through Meschack Maphangule and Abubakar before finally finding the back of the net in the 79th minute when Siphelele Ntshangase fired a low shot past Marumo.

Leopards’ hopes were further boosted five minutes later when Sandile Sibande was shown a second yellow, but Marumo produced two more good saves in the dying seconds as Polokwane held on for a second season in the top-flight.

@Impofana I couldn't agree with you more, but if we have 18 teams 4 must be relegated str8 and promote 4. South Africa needs to grow its football, if we busy with this nonsense of giving failures like P.city life line to pls we killing our football. Football is all abt competition.

I really feel sorry for Black Leopards: Polokwane City were lucky and sometimes in football those who deserve to win don't.  Anyways, hope they will in the future try to come up with a schedule that will not exhaust certain teams and that may the association re-look at ama playoffs.

PSL must scrap this stupid thing. Black Leopards worked hard and should be rewarded by going to the PSL as the 2nd best team in NFD. Polokwane City is however 2 worst performing team in the PSL yet they get to stay in the PSL. This means they can still do the same in the next season. Mxm umsuzo lento yama play offs.
