AmaZulu coach Clive Barker has blasted Safa for the appointment of national coach Joel Santana.

Barker slams Safa

Posted: 2008-09-12 10:48

The Dogs are barking at Safa and their appointment of Brazilian Joel Santana as national team coach. They add that Bafana Bafana’s recent performances are ‘a disgrace’.

According to reports on News24, Clive Barker is urging Safa to set up a meeting with former local Bafana coaches as a matter of urgency to map the way forward to the 2010 World Cup.

Barker terms Santana’s tenure as a ‘recipe for disaster’ because he maintains that Carlos Alberto Parreira’s successor has no international experience and cannot communicate with his players in English.

The current AmaZulu mentor added: “What Safa must do urgently is get all the local-born former Bafana coaches who had success with Bafana, such as myself, Trott Moloto, Shakes Mashaba and Jomo Sono, to a meeting to try and plan a way forward. We are going backwards with Santana. He is way out of his depth.”

“What were Safa thinking? We have credible coaches in South Africa who can do a far better job.”

Barker lays much of the blame at the feet of Safa chief executive officer Raymond Hack, saying: “I will tell Hack to his face when I see him that I am very disappointed in the way he is running Safa. By appointing Santana, who has no experience of international soccer, Safa are making Bafana a laughing stock. We need to stop the rot quickly.”

Earlier this week, Jomo Cosmos boss Jomo Sono has also termed Bafana Bafana’s failure to go to Angola for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in 2010 as a ‘disgrace’.

Speaking to KickOff.com, Sono said the recent poor performance by Bafana Bafana in international football has painted a bad picture for South Africa as hosts for the World Cup in 2010.

He added that both Irvin Khoza and Molefi Oliphant deserved to give the nation answers on the criteria used in selecting Joel Santana as Bafana coach.

“This is a disgrace. The African Cup of Nations is one of the most important tournaments and it was also going to be a good preparation for Bafana Bafana ahead of the World Cup in 2010.

“We can’t rely on these friendly games because they are not competitive. The Nations Cup would have been an ideal opportunity to sharpen and prepare the team for the World Cup.

“I don’t know how the interview was done or what criteria was used in appointing Santana as coach for Bafana Bafana; only Khoza and Oliphant can give you answers in that regard.”

Is this a campaigning method to be employed again by SAFA again?

lish: 2008-09-12 11:17

SAFA IS IN TROUBLE.....all the local coaches are fuming about this but I still maintain that Santana needs our support coz he is innocent afterall we must not treat other people like this it is bad for business

Leroele: 2008-09-12 11:19

It is extremely late to complain.Bafana Bafana will not win a game in 2010 World cup.We should be starting to prepare for 2014 with youngsters like Mphahlele,Manyisa,Lebese,Morton ,Siphamandla Vilakazi,Ace Bhengu,Mthembu and Chenene.
I am of the view that junior national team coaches must be foreigners like Santana,Leal of Swallows and Palacios. The senior teams must be left for local coaches like Gavin Hunt,Gordon Igesund .Pitso has lost credibility by being a ball boy to Santana and Leal.He must go back to coaching a PSL team

“What were Safa thinking? We have credible coaches in South Africa who can do a far better job.”unquote..
That's what I was talking about yesterday,a coach that will it the way it is.Unfortunatelly he is blaming Santana which is not a good thing.Santana has been with Bafana for 3 months and we can't expect him to perfom miracles in such short spell.I strongly support him(Barker)when he says SAFA is to be blamed but now it's too late for change of coaches we've done that on many occasions and it hasn't produced us fruit. The only Remedy heads must roll at SAFA leadership,S.O.S MR STOFILE,

The Dog is right... I say let's put the Bafana Bafana to the test,

PSL 11 vs Bafana Bafana in the next coming FIFA dates!

In my view and knowledge of our soccer Clive did the very same mistake as every other coach by overlooking the best players in the country but that game gave Doctor Khumalo the opportunity to shine and be included in the National squad... and we all know who won the Nations Cup akere!!!

'Oliphant messed up our game'
by Matshelane Mamabolo
September 11 2008 at 07:57AM

Molefi Oliphant deserves to be remembered as the worst president of the South African Football Association (Safa) ever - the fact we've only had one before him notwithstanding.

The evidence at hand suggests no future president could be worse than the former school principal, who is set to leave office next year when the association elects its new executive committee.

Yet many will agree that Oliphant will be doing so somewhat belatedly. For while he carries a lot of weight in a literal sense, the man hardly pushed his weight about (figuratively) in his tenure as president.

As it was, the general assumption is that he was nothing more than an Irvin Khoza yes-man. And not without reason, for the Iron Duke has always been local football's most powerful and visible man, with Oliphant doing nothing to dispel assumptions he was there only to rubber stamp what the Orlando Pirates boss and his vice-president dictated.

Oliphant said and did nothing significant in his decade-long tenure as Safa president. And perhaps, with the former, it had to do with the fact he had Raymond 'Pinnochio' Hack to do all the talking for him.

In hindsight, Oliphant was nothing more than an over-promoted vice-president who must have known from the beginning he was out of his depth and was hoping the heavyweights in his executive (Khoza and Danny Jordaan) and spin doctor (in the guise of Hack) would see him through.

The only coach capable of coaching SA is not Jomo or Barker, I thing it between Ted dumitru and Gordon Igesond. Clive won the cup when we had good players after !996 success he has never accomplished anything, Stupid.............. Clive and Jomo

Sibusiso: 2008-09-12 11:38

Pitso was great a Supersport but now he's just mediocre like all the other SA coaches. They want the salary, I'm sure Clive is tied of being relegated.

Mr Que: 2008-09-12 11:41

Sibusiso
Clive won Top8 with Santos ,think before you write the only club he has not achieved with is Amazulu and that why he keep coming back because he is not a quiter.

Leroele: 2008-09-12 11:43

What is the difference between what's happening at Pirates and SAFA?
THey both hire and fire coaches
The perfomance of the team is progressively deteriorating. There is no development at Pirates the same as in BAfana bafana.
Pirates won Africa cup trophy and Bafana followed.
This shows only one thing;Irvin Khoza is running SAFA as well.
I feel sorry for Santana and the most annoying about him is the fact that he is not trying to learn to speak English.

I’ve never seen any corrupt organization in SA than SAFA!

Proffessor : 2008-09-12 11:48

IT’S USELESS to complain now – they must fire all these guys after the world cup. Rebuild from scratch! Now we can’t fire dem as whoever is going to take over will have a heart-attack to fix this mess. Lets just hope… gamble with players… hope again that at least we make the second round. That’s all we can hope for….

this is a free country every idiot has a freedom to say whatever s*#%t they want.but it is useless if what they puke doesn't change the status qou.this problem started way back in Mali 2000 nation's cup.we talked nothing happened.as for Sibusiso suggesting Ted-he must choose platforms to showcase his stupidity.everybody knows that under ted our team failed to even score a single goal.so Sibusiso bro go & smoke your socks somewhere.even Sathana can leave tomorrow our situation wont change.

lish: 2008-09-12 11:53

Khoza must go....HACK mus follow...Olifants....you as well....Kill for BAFANA BAFANA KILL..

siviwe: 2008-09-12 12:02

We can blame and fire "Banana"(as one of the bloggers said yesterday, but that will be futile. As long as the fat cats(literally) are still in charge of SAFA we will still go down, probably when the 2010 W.cup beggins we'll in the 100's in FIFA rankings. The only remedy now is that all South africans be it we supportes, politicians should rally behind the team and give them courage.Look how america do their business, those people are so courageous starting from the head of state, just before When Phelps made history in Olympics the president was televised live from the White house wishing luck the greatest man in history of olympics. That alone motivates you to go that extra mile and put more effort. It will only be wise if all of us get behind and support the coach and Bafana. We must forget about this SAFA leadership untill the end of the world cup bcos it won't benefit the team

Why is Santana a fall guy???????????

Cliver Barker and the rest of the monkeys didn't see the fall of Bafana Bafana?

This people are hipocrites, you win a friendly they coplain , you win it their complain, what do they want.

Bafana has been going down hill for a long time now, how convient is it that they only wanna intervene when we are closer to the world cup?

Que you are right, he might have won that one cup and coached 100 other clubs to the ground that makes him a good coach.

andile: 2008-09-12 12:20

Some of the questions Jomo and Clive has asked were answered. According to what I know, head hunted coaches are not interview. Common sence also reports that internation exposure tells no tales. When the same Clive took over Bafana, his CV reflected only demographics and a few words of motivation from his previous encounter as a player and AMAZULU coach. Its could also be claimed that Santana's credantials explicilty caried more weight than those of Barker prior to archiving that historical victory. I can conclude by saying Clive's claims are baseless and insencetive however his proposal to challenge him on the field of play is pragmatic. If we continue to support ludicracy we might yield mediocrity. We are more closer to reaching our destination and lets rally behind SAFA and their plan. We have not yet failed. France failed to qualify for the European cup in 1998 but won the world cup the same year. Chess Andile Twala

Only Zambia will legitimatelly qualify to AFCON in the whole Southern African region.
Bfana Bfana are full of pride 4 nothing, big words 4 nothing. It is not about resources or Brazilian coaches. Satan (santana) has led them to hell now. No players in Bfana can be equal to the likes of Mbesuma, Katongo brothers, Chamanga etc. Shame Bfana! shame

Safa chief fumes over criticism from 'idiots'

LUCKY SINDANE AND PERCY ZVOMUYA | JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - Sep 11 2008 15:17

Raymond Hack, the CEO of the South African Football Association (Safa), has described critics who question the body's development programmes as "idiots who do not know what development is".

"If they know better, they should be the national coach. People like Neil Tovey [former captain], who has been fired many times as a coach, and Ted Dumitru talk nonsense and rubbish when they talk about the national team. Dumitru is a 78-year-old who watches English football on television and has failed as a national coach.

"We have 52 Safa regions across the country and we train coaches who coach in those leagues. They select players for the regions and compete in competitions that we organise.People have no clue but just talk whatever they feel like talking," fumed Hack

From www.mg.co.za ahaaaaaaaa aha ha ha ha ha ha ahaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!

stupid Hack!!!!!!!!!!! he is a complete idiots.

nsisko: 2008-09-12 13:40

I understand the anger of Clive Baker on Safa and Santana. This whole thing is so painful. Akumnandanga kuthi bantu balithandayo ibhola, how much more to the coaches who have been successful in coaching the nation. These guys said they wil take responsibility if Santana fails, bcoz everyone was complaining about the appointment of Santana. And now we want answers, they're nowhere to be found. Now they say it's good that we didn't quilify so that the coach might have enough time to prepare, stuff that. Before we played Nigeria they were crossing their fingers as we did, they were hoping that we might qualify. Now we didn't they're coming up with a lame excuse. We want answers not excuses Hack.

nsisko: 2008-09-12 13:47

Tivani: I wonder what Hack is thinking about Santana's record. Santana is exactly like Tovey, and Tovey is still young; since the 1980's Santana has been coaching and he never finished 2 seasons in 1 team. But because he can't speak english properly, they see him as better that Tovey.

Simon: 2008-09-12 14:18

The damage that has been done by the current SAFA management is too severe in such a way that the effects will be felt for the next 5 years, it will also affect bafana bafana's qualifiction for the world cup in 1214.

Mantane Isaiah: 2008-09-12 14:36

Not only Jomo and Barker Kick off, even Ted is signing the same song.. And they are right. I was hoping wihtin 2 months the guy will be good in English but it seems like by the opening of 2010 games that's when he will be starting to learn..

Khotso: 2008-09-12 14:38

How convinient that Barker has now joined forces with Jomo Sono. He forgets that he lost his job because of this man's backstabbing. Welcome to the backstabbing club Dog. As for us we refuse to concede that our football is crisis just because we lost to Nigeria in a game that we thourougly dominated and Guinea with a clearly experimental squad

sanele: 2008-09-13 07:08

SAME OLD SONG AGAIN SAFA OVERLOOKS LOCAL COACHES AND HIRE INTERNATIONALS WHO HAS DONE NOTHING FOR BAFANA BAFANA.I SAY FIRE THE COACH NOW!!! AND LETS HAVING A LOCAL COACHES PUT THEIR HEADS TOGETHER FOR THIS MATTER,THATS IF WE WANT TO SEE A WINNING TEAM
