Bafana Bafana star Thulani Serero is confident the side "will shock everyone" when they play World Cup-bound Australia in Sydney on Monday.
National coach Gordon Igesund has a depleted squad at his disposal due to mass player withdrawals.
Serero, however, has faith his teammates can impress at the 80 000-seater ANZ Stadium.
“This is a youthful squad, it looks ambitious and they will shock everyone on Monday. We are looking for victory and nothing else. I believe in the boys and I like their overall attitude,” said Serero.
“They have a point to prove and mark my words, this team will go far. I have seen some amazing talent in this team and this is definitely the team for the future,” added the Ajax Amsterdam midfielder, who helped his club to Eredivise honours this past season.
Igesund is likewise upbeat on their prospects.
“They all want to be part of this journey and they cannot wait for Monday’s game. They are raring to go and this is what you want in a youthful team like this,” said the four-time PSL winner.
In team news, experienced defender Thabo Nthethe picked up a knock in training but it is not thought to be too serious.
The friendly is expected to be a sold-out affair, with 50 000 tickets already snapped up. The city has a strong expatriate community, and therefore South Africa is likely to enjoy some support in the stands.
