Banyana Banyana beat Comoros in African Women’s Championship qualifier

Posted: 23 May 2014 Time: 21:24

The national women's team demolished Comoros 13-0 in the first leg of an African Women’s Championship qualifier at the Stade Said Mohamed Cheikh Stadium on Friday.

Portia Modise and Leandra Smeda scored four goals apiece on the day, while Sanah Mollo registered two goals. Mamello Makhabane, Nomathemba Ntsibande and Shiwe Nogwanya slotted home a goal each.

Coach Vera Pauw made no changes to the team that lost 1-0 to the Black Queens of Ghana in the international friendly.

Veteran striker Modise opened the scoring for Banyana Banyana 15 minutes into the game.

The heat and artificial turf did not seem to be much of a hindrance for Pauw’s charges as they continued with their dominance over Comoros.

Modise doubled the lead in the 20th minute before Smeda extended the score to three with a beautiful header from inside the box.

Mollo then registered her name on the score sheet in the first stanza before Modise made it 5-0 with minutes left before the half time break.

Banyana returned from the interval and continued with their impressive form, scoring eight goals in the second half.

“We prepared very well for the match, and I’m happy that the ladies have started finding the back of the net. We did not change the team, but we also gave other players a chance in the second half. We were dominating the game, the was not much competition from the start,” said Pauw.

“Today was a good day for women’s football and South Africa. A big thank you to our sponsor Sasol for always supporting us.”

The return leg will be played in South Africa on the first weekend of June.

Banyana return home on Saturday night. The team lands at OR Tambo International Airport at 23h50.

Why isn't this the headline story again? Oh yeah, it's got no controversy, it's about national pride and it's a very good nation builder... And we all know how our journos feel about this now don't we? Had the ladies lost, the match report would've been submitted 30 minutes after the game. If u don't believe me, u guys should all wait for Monday nd if BB loses u will c exactly what I mean. Our media is so biased it's sickening!!! They all clamour for the controversial stories nd all the articles they know will cause a stirr!!!

Big congratulations to the ladies. The nation is truly proud and all the best for the rest of ur qualifiers.....
