Former Bloemfontein Celtic winger Jonathan Solomons has switched to the amateur ranks after failing to find a team in the First Division and will this season do duty for Western Cape Vodacom League side Milano.
Since being shown the door at Celtic after an injury ravaged spell with the club, Solomons has trained with Ikapa Sporting and Hanover Park, but found no joy there.
“I have decided to come down and train with Milano for whom I will play this season. I really need game time because I haven’t been playing for a long time as I had an injury. I am not yet 100 percent fit but the good thing is that I have been playing in friendly matches since pre-season started.
“I am not completely finished, but I see this move to Milano as a way of getting to play more often. The football in this league is very fast despite being amateur, but I am coping. After one season with the team, I will move on if they are not promoted,” says Solomons.
“I went to Ikapa first and trained with them for a while and even went for a medical, but I was unfortunate that even when the medicals came through alright, the club just decided they would not sign me. I also trained at Hanover Park, but nothing happened,” he says.
The 32-year-old, who made his professional debut in 1994 at Hellenic, spent the last two years struggling with injury at Celtic starting in just three cup games in his time there.
