PSL Golden Boot, or bronze boot?

Posted: 12 May 2014 Time: 09:27

Bernard Parker has won the Absa Premiership Golden Boot with 10 goals, the lowest total since the inception of the modern day PSL in 1996.

Parker fell out of form in the last few months of the season, with his last goal coming way back on February 19 against Bloemfontein Celtic.

A worrying fact is that 'Hond' was on 10 goals (including three penalties) for nearly three months yet still no other striker was able to beat him to the Lesley Manyathela award.

Last season's League top scorer Katlego Mashego looked to have his scoring boots on again this season before the Mamelodi Sundowns striker was struck down with a long-term injury, cutting short his campaign.

Interestingly, Golden Arrows captain Thanduyise Khuboni was one of the joint-second top scorers with eight goals – with all eight of them scored from the penalty spot!

Mpumalanga Black Aces' Zimbabwean striker Tendai Ndoro, with seven goals, ended three shy of the top prize but only played half of the League season after signing for Aces in January.

Swallows have had the most top scorers and again they came close...

Think it is safe to assume that they have always had defensive problems

Question: why is the award called the "Lesley Manyathela Boot" when we have so many greats from yester years that could have been used?

For the record I also concur that we have a crisis in terms of reliable, lethal goal scorers in this country. But, I think Parker should go and collect his award. It's not his problem that other players failed to beat his mediocre tally of 10 goals. Yes, 10 goals is mediocre for a striker in a season, but if his best was 10 goals... where were the others to beat his tally?

Mac #Tse_ntsho Diski7  That's a silly way to name such an important award. he should have been honoured in the club that he represented. Look at the reasoning for the below award. An over achiever is being honoured "The award is in honor of Ferenc Puskás, the striker for Real Madrid team of the late 1950s and the 1960s, and central member of the highly successful Hungarian side of the same era. Puskás is widely considered by many to be the most powerful and prolific forward European football produced in first division football, and scored a once world record of 84 goals in 85 internationals. He is one of the top scorers of the 20th century with 512 goals in 528 matches"

stonza  I support that! there should be a benchmark set for these the looks of things next season myt be less than 10 goals

Mambush should go collect the cash and the award every season till somebody breaks that 24 tally he set.

Baxter fumbled by depending on strikers to score for us, after Parker lost form and Musona was injured we were doomed. Pitso got something right by making it a team effort to score goals and thus releasing pressure from strikers.
