Sundowns are the champions!

Posted: 6 May 2014 Time: 19:22

Veteran Surprise Moriri’s cool head and Teko Modise’s sublime vision and control ensured a ninth League title for Mamelodi Sundowns as they beat local rivals SuperSport United 3-0 to clinch the title with a Premiership record points haul.

Moriri had missed the best chance of a cagey first half, failing to hit the back of the net from inside the six yard area in the 22ndminute after a pacey burst down the right flank by Anthony Laffor and squared cross arrived slightly behind him, and his effort flew just wide.

Sundowns played neat possession football, while United threatened on the break, especially towards the end of the half, when Mweene was cautioned for rushing out of his area to bring down young full-back Khumalo as his defence stood still.

Sundowns came out firing after the interval, and in the 49th minute another neat attack was completed when Teboho Langerman lofted a ball high over from the left and Moriri rose to head home with United’s defence missing in action.

United’s domination intensified, but their second goal came when a United attack broke down. It was in the 62nd minute, just as news of a Kaizer Chiefs goal in Nelspruit was filtering through, that United broke and substitute Sibusiso Zuma found himself one-on-one with Alje Schut.

The Sundowns captain stood firm, tackling the former Bafana Bafana star on the edge of his area and Sundowns swept forward once again.

Ronwen Willams halted the attack, but clumsily, and his clearance put his defence under pressure, allowing substitute Cuthbert Malajila to win the ball and lay it into the path of Modise.

A moment to look up and see Williams dawdling in no-mans land, and then Modise chipped sublimely into the far corner from all of 35 yards. 2-0, and what a way to win his longed-for championship medal.

In their previous four League meetings, Sundowns had scored just one goal against their neighbours, now they added a third, Malajila being sent clear in the 74th minute to finish with aplomb to send the massive crowd of yellow-clad supporters – the majority allowed in free – to begin wild celebrations.

The Brazilians are 2013/2014 champions.
