FULLTIME: Maritzburg 1-2 Pirates. Bucs reach their fourth cup final of the season via an own goal from Mario Booysen and stunning strike from Mpho Makola, with United substitute Terrence Mandaza pulling one back at Harry Gwala Stadium.

94 - Mandaza has a shot deflected wide for a corner in the area!

90 - There will be four minutes of optional time. Maritzburg 1-2 Pirates.

85 - Maritzburg booking: Awal is cautioned for a hand-ball.

84 - Pirates sub: Defender Gcaba replaces midfielder Klate. Maritzburg 1-2 Pirates.

82 - Meyiwa races off his line to cut out a ball intended for Mandaza. Pirates looking a tad nervous.

80 - We're into the final ten, with Maritzburg applying pressure in these closing stages. Maritzburg 1-2 Pirates.

79 - Klate looks to be struggling with a slight back complaint. He seems willing to soldier on.

73 - MARITZBURG GOAL! The sub Mandaza pulls one back with a neat turn and shot in the box! Maritzburg 1-2 Pirates.

72 - Terrible miss from Manyisa as he blasts a volley over from a few yards out! That would have been game, set and match.

70 - Segolela goes on a promising run down the right flank before being eventually crowded out of possession. He was a touch isolated there. Maritzburg 0-2 Pirates.

66 - Pirates sub: Majoro replaces fellow striker Erasmus. Maritzburg sub: Vilakazi comes on for Sarfo-Gyamfi.

64 - Maritzburg sub: Hartog replaces Morton, who was on a yellow.

60 - PIRATES GOAL! Makola scores with a beauty from range! Maritzburg 0-2 Pirates.

57 - Pirates sub: Segolela replaces Myeni. Maritzburg 0-1 Pirates.

52 - PIRATES GOAL! Own goal by M. Booysen as he turns the ball in off the woodwork following a fantastic reaction save by Vries! Terribly unlucky for Maritzburg.

51 - Klate curls the resultant free-kick from just outside the box narrowly off target. There wasn't much in that.

49 - Maritzburg yellow: M. Booysen is cautioned for a lunge on Manyisa.

46 - We are back underway, with no changes at the break.

HALFTIME: Maritzburg 0-0 Pirates. Pirates have controlled the play but have been unable to breach a resolute United outfit.

45 - There will be two minutes of optional time.

44 - Erasmus has a shot blocked on the edge of a congested area. Every man back for the hosts.

42 - Pirates have been pressing in these latter stages, but United are organised and committed in the tackle.

40 - Evans hacks clear to deny a marauding Matlaba in the box.

37 - Clash of heads beween Makola and Sarfo-Gyamfi, with the former currently receiving some medical attention.

32 - Manyisa steers a low shot straight at Vries from outside the area after receiving Klate's free-kick from the right following a silly push by Cloete on Myeni.

30 - Maritzburg booking: Morton is cautioned for a late challenge on Jele. Perhaps a sign of frustration from the ex-Buccaneer after being made to look a touch foolish by Matlaba moments earlier.

29 - Matlaba sells Morton a dummy before drilling a left-footed shot from outside the box narrowly over! Vries had it covered though.

28 - A slight lull in action after a frenetic start to the game. Pirates having the better of the play, but United look dangerous on the counter.

24 - Mandaza nearly gets a touch on Cloete's shot across the face of goal! Good build-up that.

22 - Meyiwa confidently intercepts a cross from the left by Mkhize.

20 - Vries is alert at his near post to scoop up a shot from attack-minded fullback Matlaba.

19 - Makola thumps a shot high and wide after cutting in sharply off the left flank. Right idea, poor execution.

18 - Maritzburg sub: Mandaza replaces the injured Smeekes.

16 - Smeekes is likely to come off at any minute, as he pulls up when trying to get on the end of a delivery. Mandaza is expected to replace him.

13 - Vries is perfectly positioned to foil Klate's first-time effort in the box following Erasmus's cut-back from the right! Fantastic stuff from the Maritzburg goalkeeper, who has shone throughout the tournament.

11 - Smeekes looks like he has aggravated an old groin complaint, which kept him out of United's recent victory over Ajax in the League.

9 - Klate drags his shot across the face of goal after linking up nicely with Matlaba down the left.

8 - Mahamutsa sticks close to Sarfo-Gyamfi in the box and prevents his man from pulling the trigger. Good defending.

6 - Manyisa flashes an effort wide of the target from range. He certainly doesn't need too much encouragement to have a crack.

5 - At the other end, Vries is alert to the danger and plays the sweeper role with Manyisa looking to get on the end of a route one ball.

3 - Meyiwa gathers a corner at the second attempt. Touch nervy from the South Africa international.

1 - We have kicked off! Early chance for Makola as he fails to connect with a volley in the box off a telling left-wing cross from Klate.

The experienced Daniel Bennett will referee proceedings at Harry Gwala Stadium tonight. He will be assisted by Sandile Dilikane and Enock Molefe, while Phelelani Ndaba is the fourth official.

Maritzburg mentor Steve Komphela has notably opted for Virgil Vries in goal instead of the experienced Shu-Aib Walters, who is on the bench.

In other team changes since United's 2-0 win over Ajax Cape Town in the Premiership, Mario Booysen, Frank Sarfo-Gyamfi and Dutch attacker Orlando Smeekes are back in the mix, with the latter shaking off a groin strain.

The men to give way are: David Booysen, Nhlanhla Vilakazi and forward Terrence Mandaza.

Following Pirates' goalless draw with Wits in the League, coach Vladimir Vermezovic has made three adjustments to his unit - bringing in fullback Thabo Matlaba and midfielders Sifiso Myeni and Mpho Makola at the expense of Ayanda Gcaba, Khethokwakhe Masuku and striker Lennox Bacela.

Maritzburg XI: Vries, Awal, Booysen M, Cloete, Evans, Mkhize, Smeekes, Jayiya, Sarfo-Gyamfi, Isaacks, Morton. Subs: Walters, Matuka, Vilakazi, Mandaza, De Jongh, Lentjies, Hartog.

Pirates XI: Meyiwa, Matlaba, Jele, Mahamutsa, Lekgwathi, Klate, Myeni, Ntshumayelo, Manyisa, Makola, Erasmus. Subs: Dauda, Gcaba, Sangweni, Segolela, Majoro, Pelembe, Gabuza.

For as long as Tinkler is in the mix Myeni will always be selected and is costing us big time.

Let's rub salt to the wound Bucs by reaching yet another final. We have reached all finals this season yet we are not talking about fatigue. They were out of the ACL before the group stages, out of the Confederations Cup after only one attempt. They cowardly sent Dr Khumalo to Ivory Coast after they were condemned to a 2-1 loss at home with the disguise that they are resting Baxter. Look how rested Baxter was.

Kak line-up. Let's just follow wild donkeys out of this cup. Nxa!

This VV thing. What's would have been wrong with

1. Dauda 2. Jele 3. Matlaba 4. Mahamutsa 5. Sangweni 6. Vierra 7. Masuku 8. Manyisa 9. Majoro 10. Erasmus 11. Klate

Sox, Makola & Pelembe waiting n the wings

Vv's trying to be a smart-as, not playing his strongest squad. He better not come with excuses after the game.

Better ref. as long it's not Gqubule.

posted: 2014-05-03 18:19:29

It would have been better if it was Qongqo but anything that's not Gqubule is better. Even the lamented ACL referees are far better than Gqubule. In fact the young man who refereed the second leg in Egypt had the best match ever. The PSL has never had such a good ref.
